Fans questioned the relevance of the Roger Federer-backed Laver Cup after Team Europe announced Flavio Cobolli and Jan-Lennard Struff as alternates, expanding the six-man roster. The ATP stars will join Team Europe in Berlin.

The 2024 Laver Cup, set to begin on 20 September at Uber Arena in Berlin, marks the seventh edition of the event created by Federer's management company, Team 8, in collaboration with other partners. Every member of the winning team will receive $250,000, while the losing team earns $125,000.

Team Europe, captained by Bjorn Borg, will take on Team World, captained by John McEnroe.

Team World is represented by Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton, Francisco Cerundolo, Alejandro Tabilo, and Thanasi Kokkinakis. Meanwhile, Team Europe features Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Grigor Dimitrov.

Recently, the Laver Cup's official X account announced that Italy's Cobolli and Germany's Struff are alternates for Team Europe and will join their teammates in Berlin.

Fans criticized the event citing an already-difficult tennis schedule among other things.

Carlos Alcaraz of Team Europe calls the Roger Federer-backed Laver Cup a "serious competition"

Carlos Alcaraz has frequently commented on the challenges of the tennis schedule this season. However, he described the Laver Cup as a "serious competition" and is excited to make his debut at the event.

"I love it and I wanted to be part of it. It’s a serious competition. I think we have to represent Europe, you know, in the best way possible. The prestige that this tournament has, and, being a Laver Cup champion is a huge thing,” he said (via Laver Cup's official website).

Alcaraz stated that he looks forward to meeting with his teammates and speaking to them about various topics.

Team World has won the previous two editions of the Laver Cup. However, Team Europe boasts a better record as they triumphed in the first four editions of the event.
