Nick Kyrgios is no stranger to heated exchanges on social media. This week, he hit back at a fan on social media after the player's recent comments on the Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner doping controversies.
The fan seemingly questioned Kyrgios’ credentials as a professional tennis player, given his recent but prolonged absence from the Tour.
This series of events started with Kyrgios responding to a post that highlighted the fact that Swiatek and Sinner, the two players who remained the World No. 1 on the women’s and men’s side for the larger part of 2024 failed doping tests this year. He said,
"OUR SPORT IS COOKED,"
The fan replied to this post, saying,
“‘our’ sport mf you don’t even play"
Kyrgios responded by hinting that he planned to return to the sport at next year’s Australian Open, his home Grand Slam. He also commented on the ability of different people to have their say via social media. He said,
"Playing the aus open? When’s the last time you played a professional tournament, god social media has given peanuts a voice… hilarious"
Swiatek has received a one-month suspension after her sample failed a doping test. The Pole had tested positive for the banned Trimetazidine (TMZ) in an out-of-competition anti-doping test. Sinner, meanwhile, had dodged a sanction earlier in the year when the International Tennis Integrity Agency found that he was not at fault when his sample returned with traces of the banned Clostebol.
Nick Kyrgios takes forays into off-court activities during break from competitive tennis
Nick Kyrgios last played at the 2022 Japan Open, reaching the quarterfinals before losing to American No. 1 Taylor Fritz. Knee and wrist injuries have kept him from playing on the Tour since.
The Aussie has, however, kept himself busy while he has been away from the courts. He has forayed into broadcasting, doing commentary for tournaments. The former Wimbledon finalist conducted on-court interviews at the 2024 US Open.
Kyrgios has announced his decision to return to competition at the start of the 2025 season. He will be in action at the Brisbane International, where he lifted the title back in 2018, and intends to play at the Australian Open as well.
If all goes to plan for him, it will mark his first Grand Slam appearance since the 2022 US Open, where he reached the quarterfinals.
