Nick Kyrgios shared his assessment for two of the four quarterfinals at the 2024 US Open. The Aussie favored his compatriot in the battle between Alex de Minuar and Jack Draper but seemed to be in a tough spot while choosing between Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov.
The 2024 US Open men's singles quarterfinals are set and some mouthwatering clashes await us. 10th seed de Minaur will face 25th seed Draper and the winner of their match will take on either top seed Jannik Sinner or fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, ninth seed Dimitrov will take on 20th seed Frances Tiafoe and the winner of their match will take on either 12th seed Taylor Fritz or fourth seed Alexander Zverev.
Kyrgios, who has taken up the role of a presenter this year at the New York Major, took to his X account to assess two of the four quarterfinals. He picked de Minaur to beat Draper and felt that Tiafoe could reach his second US Open semifinal but Dimitrov had the upper hand in the head-to-head.
"De Minaur gets over Draper in my opinion. Matches up really well. Tiafoe has a great opportunity but Dimi has the 3-1 head to head…. What do you guys think?" Nick Kyrgios wrote on X.
This will be the fifth encounter between Tiafoe and Dimitrov with the Bulgarian leading 3-1. In their last match, Dimitrov beat Tiafoe 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships.
Meanwhile, the US Open quarterfinals will be the fourth encounter between Draper and De Minaur with the Aussie leading 3-0. In their last encounter in Apaculpo this year, De Minaur led 6-3, 2-6, 4-0 before the Brit had to retire.
"I can break down the game" - Nick Kyrgios responds to doubts about his US Open 2024 presence as a reporter and analyst
Apart from a match in June 2023, Nick Kyrgios has not played professional tennis since the end of 2022. He has suffered from multiple injuries in the past two years which prompted him to explore new avenues. His choice was to stick around the courts but in the role of a commentator and a reporter.
Kyrgios was a guest commentator for ESPN at the Australian Open and returned to the commentary box for BBC at Wimbledon. At the US Open, the Aussie has frequently interviewed players and provided commentary for ESPN. However, one fan questioned his presence at the event and wrote:
“Kyrgios got a weird case, why is he around?”
“Well, espn pay me to give my best knowledge and enthusiasm and character to the broadcasting scene. Also, I’ve beaten all the goats of the sport so I think I can add and break down the game. Also, I’m in New York, because I have brands that require me for appearances. X”
Recently, Kyrgios shared that he will be providing commentary for the US Open quarterfinal between Taylor Fritz and Alexander Zverev on Tuesday, September 3.
