Frances Tiafoe, Coco Gauff, Tommy Paul and the tennis community have extended their heartfelt congratulations to Michael Mmoh on his wedding to Klara Mrcela. The American tennis player tied the knot with his longtime fiance in a joyous ceremony in her hometown of Split, Croatia.
Mmoh proposed to Mrcela, a former player turned tennis coach, on December 26, 2022. However, the couple only had a short time to celebrate the happy occasion, as the American soon departed for Australia to kick off his 2023 season.
The decision paid off when Mmoh made a breakthrough at the Australian Open, pulling off a shock upset over Alexander Zverev to reach the third round of a Major for the first time in his career.
Following his win, Michael Mmoh expressed his regret at not being able to celebrate the achievement with Mrcela and disclosed that she would be joining him on tour later in the season.
"Yeah, insane. Insane. You know, because the thing is I proposed, and then two days later I left to come to these tournaments," Mmoh said in his post-match press conference.
"We definitely have got to celebrate that moment together when we're back, along with the engagement. You know, unfortunately, she wasn't here to share the moment with me, but she'll definitely be on tour in these coming months. That's for sure," he added.
On September 9, 2024, Michael Mmoh and Klara Mrcela tied the knot in Croatia, sharing a glimpse of their picturesque wedding on social media.
"Best day of my life," Mmoh captioned his Instagram post.
Mmoh and Mrcela were flooded with congratulatory messages, with Frances Tiafoe sharing a heartwarming message for his "brother" and sending his love to the couple.
"Congratulations to my brother @michaelmmoh sooo happy for you and your now wife @klaramrcela nothing but love for you both," Frances Tiafoe wrote.
Taylor Townsend also expressed her happiness for the newlyweds.
"So happy for these two!! 🥹 @michaelmmoh @klaramrcela ❤️ ✨," Townsend posted.
Coco Gauff and Tommy Paul extended their congratulations to Mmoh and Mrcela on their nuptials.
"Congratulations!!" Gauff wrote.
"Congrats!!" Paul commented.
Alongside the American stars, Thanasi Kokkinakis, Sumit Nagal, Benoit Paire, Monica Puig and Alejandro Tabilo also sent their well wishes to the happy couple.
"Frances Tiafoe is like a brother to me" - Michael Mmoh on being 'inspired' by compatriot
Frances Tiafoe's touching message for Michael Mmoh on his wedding comes as no surprise, given the duo's close friendship. During his campaign at the 2023 Australian Open, Mmoh referred to the World No. 16 as his "brother" and shared that Tiafoe's run to the semifinals of the 2022 US Open had been a major source of inspiration for him.
"No, I actually wasn't. I was tuned into every match. You know, he (Frances Tiafoe) is like a brother to me. To see that, it was beyond inspiring. Actually, shortly after that I went on a run myself," Mmoh said.
"You know, I feel like part of that has to do with him just motivating me and inspiring me. Hopefully that continues. Hopefully, you know, I close the gap between our careers," he added.
Despite Mmoh's desire to "close the gap" with Tiafoe, his 2024 season was derailed by an elbow injury. In an update on social media, the 26-year-old disclosed that he has opted for a "conservative" approach to recovery, focusing on physical therapy and rest instead of undergoing surgery.
Frances Tiafoe, meanwhile, has continued his success at the US Open, reaching the semifinals of this year's event before falling short against eventual runner-up Taylor Fritz.
