Novak Djokovic gifted himself some time off court after a victorious run at the 2023 Australian Open. But he has now begun his recovery and training ahead of his upcoming tournament – the 2023 Dubai Open, where he will be vying for a sixth title.

Djokovic's Australian Open heroics saw him lift a record 10th title at the tournament and 22nd Grand Slam overall, along with being reinstated as the World No. 1. The Serb has thus equaled the men’s record for most Slams won, alongside arch-rival Rafael Nadal.

Djokovic recently gave his fans a sneak peek into his training routine during his non-playing days. He shared a picture of himself practicing water gymnastics on his Instagram stories.

Water gymnastics is known to strengthen the muscles and help with recovery from injury. This isn’t the first time that Djokovic, who recently suffered a left hamstring injury, has incorporated the exercise into his routine.

The 22-time Slam champion had also previously shared a video of him practicing water gymnastics in order to work on his muscles and loosen his joints.

"Water gymnastics on the program. Working on muscles and loosening the joints," he had shared on social media.

Novak Djokovic hoping for exemption to play the 2023 Indian Wells Masters and Miami Open

Novak Djokovic is expected to participate in the 2023 Dubai Open in late February, provided he recovers from the hamstring injury he suffered in Australia. However, his chances of having an eventful March look grim as the Serb still faces a ban from entering the US due to his no-vaccination stance.

Djokovic is likely to miss two Masters tournaments – the Indian Wells Masters (March 8-19) and the Miami Open (March 22- April 02). But since the US vaccine mandate for foreigners entering the country is expected to be relaxed from May 2023 onwards, Djokovic is seeking a special exemption to play the two Masters events, according to his brother Djordje.

"Novak needs to get a special permission to enter, considering that the USA still doesn’t let unvaccinated foreigners into the country, " Djordje said. "There are a few days left until the decision, we are hoping for a positive outcome."

Djordje also expressed his displeasure with the strict mandates in the US, even as the rules have been relaxed almost everywhere else around the world.

"[It] is unbelievable, considering that we have seen big sporting manifestations with unvaccinated athletes throughout the world," Djordje added.
