Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski celebrated their men's doubles triumph at the Italian Open in spectacular fashion as the rain came pouring down in Rome on Sunday.

Nys and Zielinski entered the tournament unseeded and beat some brilliant pairs to reach the final, including third seeds Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek. The duo from Poland and Monaco took on the Dutch pair of Botic van de Zandschulp and Robin Haase in the final and beat them 7-5, 6-1 to win the men's doubles competition.

Nys and Zielinski received their winner's trophies as the rain came pouring down heavily. While everyone was evacuating the court, the pair were still present, lifting their trophies and celebrating in what turned out to be quite an entertaining presentation ceremony. Nys even imitated swimming before leaving the court along with Zielinski.

Both players will rise in the ATP doubles rankings after their triumph in Rome, with Nys climbing nine spots up to 14th while Zielinski jumping five places to 12th.

Elena Rybakina, meanwhile, won the women's singles title at the Italian Open on Saturday after her final opponent Anhelina Kalinina was forced to retire due to a thigh injury.

The Kazakh was broken in the very first game but she bounced back to take the opening set 6-4. The scores were tied at 1-1 in the second set before Kalinina retired in tears. Rybakina thus won her second WTA 1000 title of the 2023 season following her victory in Indian Wells.

The Kazakh said in her post-match press conference that while she was happy to win the tournament, the match didn't finish how she wanted it to due to Kalinina's injury. She also praised the Ukrainian and hoped for her speedy recovery.

"Of course, happy with the title," Rybakina said. "Not the way I want to finish this match. It's been great, I think, results for Anhelina. She played some tough battles. Really happy for her improvement. Hopefully she can continue like this.
"Pity she couldn't finish the match. I hope that it's nothing serious. So hopefully she can recover quick and she can continue like this." she added.

Elsewhere, Elise Mertens and Storm Sanders won the women's doubles title at the Italian Open. The Belgian-Australian pair were seeded fourth in the competition and won it by beating top seeds Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula 6-4, 6-4 in the final.
