Roger Federer's Wimbledon record of being the man with the most titles remained intact. Novak Djokovic was vying to tie the record but got outplayed by Carlos Alcaraz in the final as the Serb lost 2-6, 2-6, 6-7(4).
On July 14, Djokovic entered the Centre Court for the 10th time in his career, a familiar place where he had been victorious seven times earlier. This time, with more history on the line than ever before. He was eyeing to tie Roger Federer's record for the most Wimbledon titles (8) but fell short at the last hurdle.
The Serb pulled a miraculous act as he entered The Championships main draw just days after a knee surgery. He reached the final, defeating Vit Kopriva, Jacob Fearnley, Alexei Popyrin, Holger Rune, Alex de Minaur (walkover), and Lorenzo Musetti.
Facing Carlos Alcaraz in the final, Djokovic lost in a lopsided match. The Spaniard started strong, winning the first two sets 6-2, 6-2. The Serb fought hard in the third set, holding his serve till 4-4 before Alcaraz raised his level and broke the World No. 2's serve. Serving for the championship, the Spaniard quickly won three points to set up championship points.
For the first time in the match, Alcaraz showed signs of some nerves as he lost five straight points to have the third set tied at 5-5. The defending champion later overcame Novak Djokovic in the tiebreak to win Wimbledon 2024.
With Djokovic's loss, the Swiss Maestro's incredible record of eight titles at Wimbledon is still standing.
