Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian recently took note of Kendrick Lamar roping in a mariachi singer to feature in his latest album after witnessing her perform at an MLB game. The performance that impressed Lamar involved the singer, Deyra Barrera, paying tribute to the late Fernando Valenzuela, who played as a pitcher in 17 MLB seasons, across six different teams.
Valenzuela, fondly known as "El Toro" (the bull), performed at his finest while representing the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1980 to 1990. The Mexican had an unorthodox windup and was a rare example of a player in that generation who used the 'screwball' regularly. The six-time All-Star retired from baseball in 1997.
In October this year, the Mexican baseball legend passed away at the age of 63 in a Los Angeles hospital. Initially, there wasn't much clarity in terms of the cause of Valenzuela's death. Later, TMZ reported that Valenzuela died due to septic shock triggered by malfunctioning organs. However, the Mexican's family is yet to confirm this.
At Game One of the 2024 World Series, mariachi singer Deyra Barrera performed a tribute song for the late Valenzuela. Grammy and Pulitzer-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar, who was in attendance, was left impressed. According to Barrera, within a few days, she found herself recording vocals for Lamar's new album, "GNX".
Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian caught wind of Barrera's fascinating story, and proceeded to share it as an Instagram Story.
Recently, Ohanian himself promoted "GNX", Lamar's sixth studio album, via a social media post

Kendrick Lamar and Serena Williams share a Compton connection. Both were born and raised in Compton, a California city that was once notorious for its high crime rate and presence of street gangs. Many of Lamar's songs talk about the difficulties he faced growing up in the city.
Earlier this year, Williams lauded Lamar's lyrical abilities at the ESPYs. The former World No. 1 and 23-time singles Major winner said:
"If I have learned anything this year, it's that none of us, not a single one of us, not even me , should ever pick a fight with Kendrick Lamar. He will make your hometown not like you."
Williams' words came amid Lamar's feud with Canadian rapper Drake.
