The 2023 Internationaux de Strasbourg will be held from May 21-27. The tournament offers players one last chance to get some wins under their belt before the start of the French Open.

Former World No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam finalist Karolina Pliskova is the top seed. Defending champion Angelique Kerber is currently on maternity leave, setting the stage for a new winner to be crowned.

Top-20 player Beatriz Haddad Maia withdrew from the tournament, along with Amanda Anisimova and Anhelina Kalinina. Former World No. 3 Elina Svitolina has been granted a wildcard to compete there. The Ukrainian won the title back in 2020.

What is the Internationaux de Strasbourg?

The debut edition of the tournament was held in 1987 and has since been a regular pitstop on the women's tour. It is categorized as a WTA 250 event and currently features a 32-player draw.

The tournament has generally been held a week before the French Open, serving as the last warm-up event in the lead-up to the claycourt Major. Steffi Graf, Maria Sharapova and Samantha Stosur are some of the notable former champions.

Top seed Karolina Pliskova began her clay swing on a positive note by reaching the quarterfinals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. She then had to withdraw from the Madrid Open due to an injury and lost her opener at the Italian Open upon her return.

Pliskova was a semifinalist in Strasbourg last year, and will be hoping for a similar or better result this time around. Second seed Magda Linette has won and lost three matches each on the red dirt this season. She will be aiming for a quick turnaround of fortunes before heading to Paris.

Third seed Elise Mertens' results in singles have been quite inconsistent, while fourth seed Zhang Shuai returns to action after a month following an injury lay-off. Bernarda Pera, Sorana Cirstea, Marta Kostyuk and Zhu Lin are the other seeded players in the mix.

The first-round matches will begin on Sunday, May 21, and will conclude the next day. The second-round matches will go on for a couple of days after that. The quarterfinals are set for Thursday, May 25. The semifinals will take place on Friday, with the singles and doubles finals scheduled for Saturday, May 27.
