Tennis fans on the internet expressed their discontent over Carlos Alcaraz using a timeout during his shocking loss to Botic van de Zandschulp at the 2024 US Open. Zandschulp knocked the world No. 3 out 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday, August 29.

Alcaraz was all over the place on Thursday as Zandschulp broke him six times during the three-setter and hit 27 winners to book a place in the third round, where he will face Britain's Jack Draper.

After losing the first two sets, Alcaraz resorted to a timeout to regroup and turn the tide around. A tennis journalist took to X (formerly Twitter) to share an update about the Spaniard's break midmatch and said:

"Carlos Alcaraz leaves the court, needs a total reset from this two terrible sets that he just played."

Fans on X found the rhetoric prejudiced and argued that other notable players like Iga Swiatek and Novak Djokovic are usually criticized for their breaks during the matches.

"The outrage every time Novak does this."

"Why is it always a crime when Iga does it and when Alcaraz does it, it's good."

"I thought only some wee Polish girl took toilet breaks after a lost set?" a fan said.

Here are a few more reactions from X:

"When Alcaraz does it, it's a reset, but Iga and Novak do it. It's strategic, the double standard is INSANE," another said.
"And when Iga does it?" yet another said.
"If Djokovic takes a washroom break, he’s trying to break the momentum, but Alcaraz reset," one said.

Alcaraz's loss to van de Zandschulp in the second round of the US Open became his worst showing at the Grand Slam level since 2021.

In 2021, Carlos Alcaraz suffered second-round exits from the Australian Open (lost to Mikale Ymer) and Wimbledon (lost to Daniil Medvedev) before the US Open. His 2024 outing in New York matches that record.

Novak Djokovic, on the other hand, is set to play his third-round match against Alexei Popyrin, the 28th seed from Australia, on Saturday, August 30, at Flushing Meadows. He holds a 3-0 lead over Popyrin in the head-to-head.

On the WTA side, first seed Iga Swiatek will take on Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the third round. Pavlyuchenkova staged a comeback win against Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the second round.
