Martina Navratilova has called out GOP Senator Tim Scott for his claim that former President Donald Trump did more for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) than current President Joe Biden. Navratilova reshared a video of Scott’s remarks and wrote that he was "lying through his teeth".Navratilova, who won 18 Grand Slam singles titles and 59 Majors in total, is known for her outspoken views on social and political issues. The Czech-American is a vocal supporter of LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, and racial justice. She is also a critic of Trump and his policies.HBCUs are institutions of higher education that were established before 1964 with the primary mission of serving the Black community. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, there are 99 HBCUs in the United States, enrolling about 250,000+ students. The controversy started when Scott appeared on Fox News' 'The Ingraham Angle' in January 2024 and praised Trump for his support of HBCUs. The South Carolina Republican cited Trump's signing of the FUTURE Act in 2019, which made permanent $255 million in annual funding for minority-serving colleges, including roughly $85 million for HBCUs.While the FUTURE Act was a significant achievement for HBCUs and other minority-serving institutions, it was not initiated by Trump or his administration but rather continued a program that was started by President Barack Obama in 2010.It was a bipartisan bill introduced by Rep. Alma Adams and Mark Walker in 2019, and passed by both chambers of Congress with overwhelming support. Trump signed it into law, but he did not propose it or increase the funding for HBCUs.Moreover, Biden has also shown strong support for HBCUs and their students. According to the White House, the Biden-Harris administration has announced a record of over $16 billion in support for HBCUs from fiscal years 2021 to 2024.Navratilova was among the many people who reacted to Scott’s video on X (formerly Twitter), where it was posted by an account that claimed that the GOP Senator lied."Tim Scott claims Trump 'brought the most money in for HBCUs.' This is a lie. President Biden has invested more in HBCUs than at any time in American history," the user wrote. The 18-time Grand Slam champion reshared the video and wrote that Scott was "lying through his teeth" and "he knows he is lying"."Scott is lying through his teeth. And worse- he knows he is lying. But then- it’s a cult," Martina Navratilova wrote.Martina Navratilova asserts that Donald Trump's 2024 presidency would be detrimental to women and people of colorMartina Navratilova at the 2023 WTA FinalsLast year in December, tennis legend Martina Navratilova expressed that a Donald Trump presidency would be harmful to women and non-white individuals.Navratilova, known for her frequent criticisms of Trump on social media, commented on a tweet about Kate Cox, a woman in Texas who had to leave the state to access urgent abortion care. The tweet suggested that every pregnant woman in the U.S. would face danger if Trump were re-elected in 2024."If Trump wins the 2024 election, every pregnant woman in America -- red state, blue state, purple state, wherever -- will be at risk, just as Kate Cox was in Texas. Abstaining from the election or wasting your vote on a 3rd party says you don't give a damn about women like Kate," the tweet read.In response, Martina Navratilova asserted that Trump's return to the presidency would signify a war on women and minorities."It will be war on all women and all non white people," Martina Navratilova wrote.
