Grigor Dimitrov recently highlighted the 'double standards' in Jannik Sinner's doping controversy. The Bulgarian's opinion sparked discussions among several tennis fans as many of them, much like him, felt that the handling of the Italian's case was 'strange'.A month back, the public was made aware that Jannik Sinner had tested positive for Clostebol, a banned drug, twice. However, the Italian maintained innocence and managed to prove it to the ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency), stating that the consumption of the drug was, in fact, accidental. The Italian's case divided the tennis fraternity into two halves, people who came out in his support and people, who called for harsher actions against him.In a recent interview with bTv, a Bulgarian television channel, Grigor Dimitrov mentioned how other players involved in a similar situation in the past were treated differently than Sinner while discussing the case. He highlighted the 'double standards' in the Italian's case and found the treatment of this particular case 'strange'."There are players who experienced completely different processes, with different procedures, and it made me wonder if there were double standards. Double standards, this is essentially what I say. We see this in other sports as well. It's not a secret. But the way this case unfolded was very strange to me, even as someone who has been on the ATP tour for many years," Dimitrov said. Many tennis fans agreed with Grigor Dimitrov and took to X (formerly Twitter) to react to his statement. One of the fans said how they all thought the same and though they didn't doubt Jannik SInner's innocence, they felt that the CEO of the ATP being an Italian helped."We all thought the same Grigor. I don't doubt Jannik's innocence but it sure helps to have an italian sitting as atp ceo," the fan commented.Another fan seconded Dimitrov's opinions and called Jannik Sinner's case a 'disgrace'."He is correct. This is a disgrace to tennis," the fan said. Here are some other reactions from the fans towards Dimitrov's comments:"He is right, there should be no double standards in competitive sports," a fan mentioned."Enough players have questioned the double standard bestowed on the Italian boy. If not for Gaudenzi and his sponsors, he would have been meted a different outcome. Anyone who thinks otherwise is living a lie," a fan opined."This sports lost its credibility. Every time he plays, no matter how good he can be, there's always doubts," a fan felt."Agree with dimi , clearly it is visible that there has been a double standards, don't forget how halep has been treated right after the doping accusation," a fan said.Grigor Dimitrov was in action at the US Open, where he did well to reach the quarterfinals after beating Kyrian Jacquet, Rinky Hijikata, Tallon Griekspoor and sixth seed Andrey Rublev. Here, he faced 20th seed Frances Tiafoe and trailed by one set to two. The American led 4-1 in the fourth set and at this point, the Bulgarian retired due to injury."If you have read the documents and understand the process... there is no discrimination here" - Casper Ruud on Jannik Sinner's caseJannik Sinner (Source: Getty)Casper Ruud on the other hand, was of a different opinion than Grigor Dimitrov. Though the Norwegian initially doubted the handling of Jannik Sinner's case, once he read about it in detail and familiarized himself with the rules, he concluded that there was no discrimination."I noticed at the start, before I got into the case and the sequence of events, that I also thought there were a few owls in the bog. He is number one in the world, there had to be discrimination. But then I familiarized myself with the case and the rules," Ruud said (translated from Norwegian)."If you have read the documents and understand the process in this type of case, then you understand that there is no discrimination here," he added.Jannik Sinner's case is still a hot topic of discussion in the tennis fraternity. It came out in public after the Italian clinched the Cincinnati Masters. Amidst this, the World No. 1 managed to clinch the US Open and win his second Grand Slam of the year. The Italian will next be seen in action at the China Open where he is the defending champion. He is slated to be joined by the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, and others.Meanwhile, Casper Ruud will be seen in action for Team Europe at the upcoming Laver Cup in Berlin, starting on September 20. Grigor Dimitrov, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas are the others who will represent the team.
