Nick Kyrgios was in disbelief as his favorite NBA team, the Boston Celtics, suffered a stunning loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. The Aussie couldn’t hide his shock, calling it the "worst half of basketball" he had seen from the team this year.
The Boston Celtics, widely regarded as one of the greatest teams in NBA history, faced off against the Memphis Grizzlies on December 8 as part of their two-game road trip at the TD Garden. The defending champions entered the game on a six-game winning streak, but things ultimately didn't go their way.
The Grizzlies secured a significant 127-121 victory, marking their first win in Boston since 2013 and snapping a 10-game losing streak at TD Garden. The win improved their record to 16-8, propelling them into a tie for the No. 2 spot in the Western Conference.
With plenty of free time as he prepares for his comeback to tennis at the Brisbane International next year, Kyrgios spent the day watching the NBA game. He kept his fans updated throughout the match via X (formerly Twitter).
"That’s the worst half of basketball I’ve seen from the Celtics this year," he wrote.
The Aussie added:
"Missed 9 free throws in a 4-point game. Nice."
"3 diabolical out-of-control possessions in a row for Jaylen," the former Wimbledon finalist continued.
Nick Kyrgios: "As a kid, basketball was my first passion"
Nick Kyrgios’ passion for basketball is undeniable. It was evident once again in a 2023 interview with the PTPA, where he shared that basketball has always been his preferred sport over tennis.
He said:
"Yeah, I mean, as a kid basketball was my first passion. So I've pretty much grown up watching them play as a team and obviously the association. I modeled like myself, my fashion, the way I play the sport of tennis, on the NBA."
Kyrgios also mentioned how tennis would benefit if there were more unity and a stronger connection among players on both tours, like in the NBA.
"I think that's what tennis needs," Kyrgios said. "We need to come together a bit more. I mean, I feel very isolated at tournaments. Sometimes I feel a bit, I'm overstepping if I'm approaching another player."
"I feel like that's the biggest thing about tennis. Like we are competing against each other but I think it needs to more of that team environment," he added.
