Coco Gauff's triumph at the China Open 2024 pushed her back into the top four of this week's WTA rankings. She beat Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-3 in the final on Sunday (October 6) to claim her second title of the year, as well as her second WTA 1000 title.
Gauff rose by two spots to No. 4, a position she would be keen to maintain until the end of the season. She could overtake No. 3 Jessica Pegula with a deep run at the Wuhan Open, provided her compatriot doesn't do the same.
Aryna Sabalenka missed a great opportunity to close the gap between her and the top-ranked Iga Swiatek. The former lost in the China Open quarterfinals to Muchova, and now the latter has a lead of 1,000 points. The Belarusian, who's undefeated at the Wuhan Open, could slash her lead down to 59 points with another title at the venue.
Elena Rybakina and Jasmine Paolini each slipped a spot to be ranked No. 5 and No. 6 this week. Zheng Qinwen and Emma Navarro remain steady at their respective career-high positions of No. 7 and No. 8. Danielle Collins is up next at No. 9, and Barbora Krejcikova rounds out the region at No. 10.
Muchova's run to the final in Beijing helped her climb 19 spots to No. 30. Teen sensation Mirra Andreeva advanced to the quarterfinals there and lost to Zheng. Nevertheless, it has resulted in her top 20 debut in this week's WTA rankings as she jumped two spots to No. 19.
Anna Kalinskaya, Donna Vekic attain new heights in this week's WTA rankings
Anna Kalinskaya and Donna Vekic are in the midst of a career-best season, and now have another reason to celebrate. Both of them have scaled new career highs in this week's WTA rankings.
Kalinskaya moved up by a spot to No. 13, while Vekic rose by two rungs to No. 18. Magdalena Frech cracked the top 30 for the first time as she jumped two places to No. 29.
Rebecca Sramkova enjoyed a good couple of weeks with a runner-up finish at the Jasmin Open, a title at the Thailand Open, and a third-round showing at the China Open. Her most recent result pushed her up by nine spots to a new career peak of No. 52.
Katie Volynets (No. 55), Renata Zarazua (No. 72), and Yulia Starodubtsewa (No. 79) are among the other players to reach a new career high this week. In other news, Naomi Osaka zoomed up 15 spots to No. 58 due to her fourth-round exit from the China Open, and Ajla Tomljanovic is back in the top 100 at No. 86 after winning the Hong Kong Open, a WTA 125 event.
