Novak Djokovic advances to third round with a straight sets win over Jarkko Nieminen

Novak Djokovic plays a forehand in his win over Jarkko Nieminen in the first round

Novak Djokovic booked a place in the third round with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 win over Jarkko Nieminen.

The World No. 1 was broken in the first game as Nieminen attacked Djokovic’s serve to take the early lead. The Finn looked in complete control of the proceedings on center court before Djokovic started to find his rhythm. The Serb won all points when he came to the net and broke the Finn’s serve twice to lead by a set.

Djokovic broke Nieminen’s serve twice in the second set and won 80 % points off his first serves. Djokovic hit 13 winners to just 2 by Nieminen. It was a good set to watch from a fans’ perspective as both players hit a combined 5 unforced errors.

Djokovic started serving first in the third set and a solitary break early on in the set was enough for the defending champion to move to the third round.

He will face Australian Bernard Tomic in the third round on Friday. Tomic beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert 7-6 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (5).

"On this warm day it's good to spend a little bit less time," Djokovic told BBC Sport.

"I'm glad with the way I'm playing and I'm getting into form. As the tournament progresses, hopefully I'll be able to elevate the level of my performances."
