Roger Federer and the Indian connection

Federer spending time with children during his visit to the tsunami affected areas.

World No. 3 Roger Federer confirmed his participation in December’s International Premier Tennis League, much to excitement of all Indian fans. The 17-time Grand Slam champion will play two matches in Delhi from 6th to 8th December.

However, this will not be the Swiss maestro’s first visit to India. The former World No. 1 had visited the country as the UNICEF Goodwill ambassador in December 2006 and spent time in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, which was hit the hardest by the deadly tsunami waves.

He said then that the kids had his full support and he thoroughly enjoyed his maiden visit to the country.

"I have spent a lot of time with the children and I think I now know each of them by their first name. I told the children that I would always be there for them. This first visit in India has been fantastic," Federer said.

Despite being a professional tennis player, the 33-year-old is also a keen follower of cricket. Federer’s mother being South African, he was exposed to the game from an early age.

Ahead of his current visit to the country, the Swiss ace asked his Indian Twitter followers for a favour. He tweeted his followers to photoshop pictures of him at some of the places he could visit during short two-day trip.
