Federer underwent an arthroscopic surgery on his knee

Much to the delight of his large brigade of fans, 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer has announced that he is set to return to the ATP Tour at next week’s Miami Open, the season’s second ATP Masters 1000 tournament. The World No. 3 was out since January after undergoing an arthroscopic surgery on his knee which he injured while walking with his daughters at a park in Melbourne.

The incident happened a day after he lost the Australian Open semi-finals to eventual champion Novak Djokovic. It forced him to withdraw from two ATP 500 level tournaments in February – the World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam and the Dubai Duty Free Championships – besides the currently ongoing Masters event at Indian Wells.

The 34-year-old had originally planned to make his return during the clay season at the Monte Carlo Masters in April. But it seems now that his rehabilitation and recovery have gone faster than expected, hence the preponement.

This will mark the former World No. 1's first appearance at Crandon Park since succumbing to a three-set defeat to Kei Nishikori in a thrilling quarter-final in 2014. Federer had won the event twice in 2005 and 2006.

The tournament is scheduled from March 23- April 3, 2016.
