Roger Federer reatcs after beating Tomas Berdych on Tuesday

17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer progressed through to his 49th Grand Slam semifinal after beating Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic 7-6 6-2 6-4 in the quarterfinal of the 2016 Australian Open on Tuesday.

The opening set saw the Swiss ace win 88% of his first service points as compared to 80% for Berdych. He also had the upper hand when it came to the number of winners(16) as compared to 13 for his opponent and edged out Berdych with the total tally of winners(46) to 42 to win the set in a tiebreak 7-6(7-4).

The second set proved to be a much more comfortable affair for Federer as he held all the aces almost throughout the contest, looking convincing near the net as well as at the far end, converting both the break point opportunities that came his way and winning a total of 28 points as compared to 18 for Berdych to win the set 6-2.

Federer continued to maintain his grip over proceedings in the third set as well, looking assured once again on his first serve as well as at the net and with a tally of 16 winners and 35 points, won the set 6-4 to enter the final four of the tournament.

He will play the winner of the match between Novak Djokovic and Kei Nishikori.
