Third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime will take on Gregoire Barrere in the second round of the ABN AMRO Rotterdam Open on Thursday.

Auger-Aliassime has been in hot and cold form in the last few months, amassing 27 wins from 35 matches and title-winning runs at the Firenze Open, European Open, and the Swiss Indoors Basel. He also reached the semifinals of the Rolex Paris Masters and guided Canada toward their first-ever Davis Cup finals win.

However, the 22-year-old is yet to find his best form this year. He entered the Rotterdam Open on the back of a first-round exit at the Adelaide International 1 and a fourth-round loss at the 2023 Australian Open. The Canadian began his campaign with a competent win over Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

Gregoire Barrere, on the other hand, has been in decent form since returning to the main tour at the Adelaide International 1. He's chalked up 13 wins from 17 matches and a runner-up finish at the Quimper Challenger. The Frenchman also reached the second round in Auckland and the quarterfinals at the Montpellier Open.

He's continued his encouraging run of form at the Rotterdam Open and is through to the second round of the ATP 500 event for the first time in his career. Barrere first defeated the likes of Jesper De Jong and Quentin Halys in the qualifiers and then outfoxed David Goffin in straight sets 6-0, 7-6(3) to secure his place in the second round.

50th ABN AMRO Open 2023 - Day 2

An engrossing contest is on the cards in the second round of the ABN AMRO Rotterdam Open as defending champion Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on in-form Frenchman Gregoire Barrere. Both players got off to a confident start in the first round and flawlessly executed their game plan.

Auger-Aliassime served exceedingly well in his previous match, winning 85% of his first serve points and saving all the break points he faced against Sonego. The Canadian looked sharp with his strokeplay and didn't shy away from expressing his elite skill set. His flat and accurate forehands never let Sonego build any kind of momentum in their bout.

Barrere will need to learn about the Canadian’s weaknesses and plan an efficient strategy to have a chance at continuing his three-match win streak. He also served well in the previous tie, winning 74% of his first serve points and saving three out of five break points against Goffin. The Frenchman won two challenger series titles on hardcourt last year and has great potential to be successful on the main tour. He has a strong presence at the baseline and is patient with his overall gameplay.

Auger-Aliassime will be up against a sticky customer, who will make him work hard to find a winner on a regular basis. Barrere's defensive skills and smart decision-making might give him an outside chance in this second-round bout, but the defending champion and third seed should be able to find a way to progress to the next round.

Pick: Auger-Aliassime to win in three sets
