The Dubai Tennis Championships is a professional tennis tournament owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free and held annually in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, on outdoor hardcourts. The tournament is held at the end of February and consists of a women's tournament followed by a men's event.
The Dubai Tennis Championships debuted at the Aviation Club as an ATP 250 tournament. In 2001 the ATP upgraded the tournament from 250 level to 500 level tournament.
Dubai Tennis and philately
The United Arab Emirates released a set of two stamps on the Dubai Tennis Championships in 2007. The stamps issued on 19 February 2007 feature a tennis racket and a tennis ball.
The 2007 Dubai Tennis Championships were played in Dubai from 19 to 24 February for the women and from 26 February to 4 March for the men. It was the 15th edition of this professional tennis tournament.
Roger Federer won the men's singles title in 2007 (his fourth title) and Justin Henin (Belgium) won the women's title in 2007 (her fourth title). Federer holds the record for most men's titles (seven) at Dubai and Henin shares the record for most women's titles (four) with Venus Williams.
Novak Djokovic and Federer hold the record for most consecutive titles (three each). In men's doubles, India's Mahesh Bhupathi holds the record for most overall titles ( five).
At the 2019 Dubai Tennis Championships, Federer will aim to win his 100th career title and 8th in Dubai. He has defeated German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the first round, and will face Fernando Verdasco next.Published 25 Feb 2019, 23:23 IST
