Fifth seed Liudmila Samsonova will take on Leylah Fernandez in the second round of the 2024 Internationaux de Strasbourg on Tuesday (May 21).

Samsonova was drawn against 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova in her opener. The Russian was off to a fast start, breaking her opponent twice to nab the first set.
Samsonova did the same in the second set and was on the cusp of victory but fell apart amidst mounting resistance from Krejcikova. She stopped the Russian from closing out the match at 5-2 and saved a match point to lead 6-5.
Krejcikova came out on top in the tiebreak to level the proceedings. Samsonova was on the verge of losing the match after going 3-1 down in the decider. However, the Russian turned things around, sweeping five of the next six games for a 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-4 win.
Fernandez, meanwhile, was up against Anastasia Potapova in the first round. The Canadian recovered from a break down in the first set to get back on serve. However, she got broken once again to trail 3-2.
Fernandez fought hard and saved seven set points but couldn't stop Potapova from claiming the opener. The Canadian squandered her early lead in the second set, though, but regrouped to clinch the set on a tiebreak.
Fernandez was in control of the decider until 5-2 but stumbled while trying to close out the match. While she dropped serve, she broke back immediately to wrap up a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 comeback win.

Both players dug deep in the first round to score a much-needed win. It was the second win of the clay season for both of them, as well as the sixth of the season for Samsonova, and ninth for Fernandez.
Samsonova has been in dire form the entire season, and apart from her run to the semifinals of the Abu Dhabi Open, she hasn't won back-to-back matches.
Fernandez is in the same boat as Samsonova. The Canadian has stringed together consecutive wins just once this season, which came during her quarterfinal run at the Qatar Open.
Samsonova's inconsistent shotmaking has been the primary reason for her lack of success this year. She makes far too many errors and against a quality defensive player like Fernandez, the Russian could find it tough to get out of a tight spot.
