Roger Federer, seeded 7th at the 2013 US Open, cruised into the second round of the Grand Slam event with an easy 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 win against Slovenia’s Grega Zemlja. With the win, Federer extended his streak of 38 consecutive second round appearances at the Grand Slams.

Federer, who was due to play yesterday before rain forced a postponement, began the game really well. His serve in particular was working extremely well as he got many cheap points on it. Federer served six aces and lost just three points in total – two on the first serve and one on the second – en route to taking the first set 6-3.

He gained an early break in the second game before breaking Zemlja once more to romp away with the second and take a two-sets-to-love advantage after just 48 minutes.

Federer did get broken after a patchy game, just after breaking Zemlja’s serve to lead 4-3. But, the 5-time champion here, got his focus back as he broke the Slovenian a second time to take the match in straight sets.

The Swiss will next play Carlos Berlocq from Argentina, who came through a taxing five-setter against Santiago Giraldo of Colombia.
