Roger Federer had a busy month in September with his tennis-related commitments. He returned to Arthur Ashe Stadium during the 2024 US Open and was welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd.
Federer returned to Flushing Meadows for the first time since his retirement. He last competed at the US Open in 2019. He is one of the most successful players in New York, winning the title five times. He won five consecutively in New York from 2004 to 2008, a feat yet to be repeated.
The former World No. 1 was in attendance during the night session on Tuesday and witnessed the quarterfinal clash between Aryna Sabalenka and Zheng Qinwen and stayed for the Grigor Dimitrov match against Frances Tiafoe, which followed.
Roger Federer was welcomed with loud cheers from a packed house at Flushing Meadows as the fans enjoyed seeing him back in New York. The 20-time Grand Slam winner enjoyed an iconic career at the US Open, winning 89 matches while suffering 14 losses. He is still the last male player to defend his US Open title having won back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008.
During his appearance in New York, Federer shared his views on the Jannik Sinner doping controversy. The Italian star escaped a ban despite testing positive twice for the banned substance, Clostebol.
"I understand the frustration of, 'Has he been treated the same as others?' And I think this is where it comes down to. I think we all trust pretty much that Jannik didn’t do anything, but the inconsistency potentially that he didn’t have to sit out while they weren’t 100 percent sure what was going on, I think that’s the question here that needs to be answered," Roger Federer said.
After attending the US Open, Federer flew to Berlin to attend the Laver Cup. He is one of its founding members and the tournament is close to the Swiss' heart.
