The second leg of the 2023 Sunshine Double — the Miami Open — is all set to keep tennis fans hooked soon after the conclusion of the ongoing BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on March 19.

The tournament in Miami will be the second consecutive joint ATP and WTA 1000 event after Indian Wells, and while it's the second Masters tournament of the season, the women will enjoy their third WTA 1000 event. The 38th edition of the tournament will feature most of the top players on the tour.

The COVID-19 emergency restrictions in the US are set to end on May 11, 2023. This means that six-time winner Novak Djokovic cannot participate in Miami. Last month, the Serb requested the authorities for an exemption to play in the two events. While he withdrew from Indian Wells on March 6, he is still waiting for an answer as far as Miami is concerned.

Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios are the other two names that will be absent since they are recovering from hip and knee injuries, respectively. On the women's side, Anett Kontaveit will be a notable absentee as she continues her recovery from a severe back injury.

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek and World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz are the respective WTA and ATP defending champions this year. The Pole defeated Naomi Osaka in the final and became the youngest player to win the Sunshine Double in 2022. Alcaraz, meanwhile, beat Casper Ruud in the final to lift his maiden Masters trophy at the age of just 18.

2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem and 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu have received wildcards into the main draw.
