The seven-part crime-thriller series Mercy For None made its debut on Netflix on June 6, 2025. Set in a dark and unforgiving criminal realm, the series follows the bleak path of Nam Gi-jun (So Ji-sub).
He is a former syndicate enforcer who once slashed his own Achilles tendon to leave the crime world behind. More than a decade later, he’s pulled back into the shadows after the puzzling demise of his younger sibling, Nam Gi-seok (Lee Jun-hyuk).
With vengeance burning in his chest, Gi-jun returns to the turf wars to unearth the truth behind his brother’s death. As Gi-jun retraces his brother’s last days, he steps into a complicated battlefield ruled by two dominant mobs, Lee Ju-woon’s (Heo Jun-ho) and Koo Bong-san’s (Ahn Kil-kang).
Ju-woon, once a father figure to Gi-seok, now leads one of the city’s largest factions, while Bong-san controls the rival organization and grooms his hot-headed son Koo Jun-mo to inherit the throne.
As Mercy For None progresses, it’s uncovered that Lee Geum-son was the person who murdered Gi-seok. By the finale, Gi-jun manages to get his payback on Geum-son.
Who murdered Nam Gi-seok in Mercy For None?
Tensions ignite when Jun-mo humiliates Gi-seok in public in episode 1, only to have him killed soon after. However, the story is far from simple. Despite initial suspicions pointing toward Jun-mo, it’s revealed that a half-Korean assassin named Kaneyama carried out the hit.
He did it under orders from Lee Geum-son (Choo Young-woo), who is Joo Woon’s quiet but calculating son. Geum-son, a prosecutor by title, lives a double life, manipulating from behind the curtains.
He’s backed by Cha Yeong-do (Cha Seung-won), a corrupt lawman who’s been puppeteering both gangs for years, secretly instigating the split and reaping the rewards from chaos.
Geum-son intends to overthrow his father and seize complete command of the criminal world. After Gi-jun eliminates Kaneyama, the dominoes begin to fall. Gi-jun uncovers an incriminating voice file linking Geum-son to multiple killings, including his brother’s.
He entrusts the recording to Cheon Hae-bom (Jung Gun-joo), a loyal friend of Gi-seok, hoping that at least someone survives to expose the truth.
As the dust settles, Geum-son finally seizes full control by eliminating his own father and forcing the rival gangs into a merger. He believes he’s won. But his crimes are laid bare in public, stripping him of his legal power and respect.
Geum-son attempts to escape, aided by his father’s trusted enforcer Choi Sung-cheol (Jo Han-chul), who starts doubting it all.
Did Nam Gi-jun manage to get justice for his brother Nam Gi-seok’s murder in Mercy For None?
The Netflix drama's final act plays out in a blood-soaked confrontation. Gi-jun hunts down Geum-son, who still refuses to show remorse. In a chilling showdown, Geum-son attempts suicide, unwilling to face justice.
Gi-jun intervenes, not to save him, but to make him feel the fall. The final knife lands in cold retribution. Geum-son dies seated in the very chair he schemed to steal, a haunting image of his failed legacy. At last, Gi-jun, having destroyed the web of lies, finds no peace or redemption.
Will Mercy For None return for season 2? Here’s what the ending suggests
The possibility of Mercy For None getting a second season appears slim. The drama wrapped up with a clear resolution, showing Gi-jun seated quietly beside a fire, with his brother Gi-seok seemingly beside him. This hints at closure, both emotionally and narratively.

By the finale, Gi-jun avenged his brother’s death, bringing an end to the cycle of violence they were caught in. The final scene, with him alone, also suggests his own end, leaving no threads open for continuation.
The series appears to have fulfilled its arc, with no characters or conflicts left to explore. As a result, a follow-up season seems unlikely, given that Gi-jun’s journey has reached its conclusion and there is no remaining storyline to expand.
Mercy For None includes seven episodes, each lasting 45 to 50 minutes. It’s currently available to stream on Netflix.
