On June 15, 2025, a fan-run account called @FACE_JIMIN1013 reported that BTS’ Jimin was made a Squad Leader during his military service. The update has since spread widely online and seems to be backed by several informal yet consistent references.
In the comments section of a YouTube clip discussing the Who hitmaker's recent release from duty, a user mentioned serving in the same 5th Division artillery group. The person wrote (as translated via fan account PJM_Hungary):
"I also served in the 5th Division artillery unit, and for some reason this just makes me proud 😆 Thanks. Major Jimin."
Another commenter responded:
“I was in the same unit too — Jimin was an artilleryman and even became a squad leader.”
While the 29-year-old's position was not disclosed earlier, these personal accounts and internal signs have now drawn attention to his military duties and the responsibilities he carried during his service.
"So proud of you Jimin I hope the world returns even just a bit of the good you put out there You are a real hero, a worthy role model," an X user commented.
According to the Department of Defense Blog, in the South Korean military system, the squad head role is not given without consideration.
It is usually assigned by a senior officer (typically someone at the colonel level) and goes to service members who display strong accountability and consistency. The role involves planning, giving orders, guiding missions, and overseeing group coordination during operations.
"If He isn't the real Captain Korea then who is? No one did what he did, Ace and Squad leader, selected by the colonel himself. This is huge! We'd never know if it weren't for other soldiers!! Jm must've wanted to stay humble and not outshine others too hard, he's such an angel 😭," a fan remarked.
"I need jimin to come live asap nd brag nd talk about all his huge achievements omg Notice No one big Army account speaking about it and if it was another mmbr you would see them talking non stop days and nights PJMS don’t stop talking about this this is huge," a user mentioned.
"Pretty big deal considering how selective they are with those positions. He wasn’t just part of the team — he led it," a person shared.
Many have affectionately called him “GOATMIN,” celebrating his discipline and ability to exceed expectations even in the military.
"A squad leader in the South Korean military leads a small group of soldiers, ensuring discipline, training, and communication between higher-ups and the team. They handle daily tasks, boost morale, and are key to the squad's effectiveness. SO PROUD OF YOU 'GOATMIN' 😭😭😭🎖️," a netizen said.
"That's why they (Soldiers) named him 'GOATMIN' 😭 Jimin served as catcher & squad leader..responsible for leading and guiding his team. He was a special warrior, Ace of 4th cannon subdivision now squad leader," a viewer noted.
"OK JM,Whenever I think I hv seen all of u & shldn't be surprised at ur achievements cuz u hv always been the best of the bests ,I still get awestruck cuz you exceeded & topped every expectation. You prooved once the head always the head,u went to lead like the leader u are,ACE👑," another fan added.
BTS Jimin's top military honors
BTS' Jimin completed his term in South Korea’s compulsory armed service on June 11, 2025. He served under the Artillery Division within the 5th Infantry Unit in Yeoncheon during his deployment.
In early 2024, he secured the Best Trainee Award & Division Commander's Commendation for ranking top among recruits in training performance. That same year in June, he advanced in rank ahead of schedule, a move granted to personnel who exhibit exceptional discipline and progress.
This recognition is selectively given to soldiers meeting elite military standards. It was later reported that the K-pop idol had been promoted from Private First Class to Corporal.
During his time, BTS' Jimin remained with the 5th Infantry’s artillery squad, fulfilling assigned responsibilities under standard military procedure. His enlistment and earned distinctions aligned with formal evaluation systems in place across active-duty service.
