The much-awaited Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is finally coming to theaters on May 24, 2024, after being delayed. The 5th film in the Mad Max franchise comes nearly four years after Furiosa was confirmed in 2020.

The all-action, female-led Mad Max: Fury Road prequel tells the origin story of Furiosa, the pivotal character first introduced in 2015 in Fury Road, who was played by Charlize Theron. While Furiosa is back on the big screen, she will have a new face—a younger version of the post-apocalyptic heroine—one of the surprises the spin-off promises to provide the viewers.

For the upcoming film, Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy takes the helm to play Furiosa, alongside Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, and Nathan Jones.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will be released on May 24 theatrically

With the audience demanding a prequel to feature Furiosa following the Fury Road release, it was given a green light in 2020 and was originally announced for a 2023 theatrical release. However, delays in the production and Warner Bros. release schedule being shuffled caused the film to be pushed back.n

Almost four years later, the film is finally coming to theaters nationwide. Ahead of the release, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was screened at the Cannes Film Festival on May 15, which received high praise.

And as mentioned above, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will be out in cinemas worldwide on Friday, May 24, 2024. But, Australian fans get a treat with a one-day earlier theater release on May 23.

What is the plot of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga?

The plot of the films in the Mad Max franchise is rather simple and the upcoming film is the same. That said, the strong star-studded cast members and action-packed sequences will help make the storyline shine.

In Fury Road, Furiosa’s character is introduced as a war captain serving the monstrous warlord Immortan Joe, eventually betraying him to save the breeders he kept hostage. The 4th movie in the dystopian series, however, did not explain how Furiosa became one of Immortan Joe’s top Imperators, which the upcoming film aims to explore.

Set 15 years before Mad Max: Fury Road, the film follows the origin story of the titular character as she was kidnapped from the Green Place of Many Mothers. From there, Furiosa embarks on a journey full of deadly trials as she tries to make it back to her verdant homeland.

The official synopsis reads:

"As the world fell, young Furiosa is scratched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immontan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home."

Is Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga coming to streaming?

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is fully expected to be released on Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform Max (former HBO Max) a couple of months after its theatrical run. The streaming release date, however, is still unknown.

Major releases on Max are harder to predict, which is usually dependent on the film’s box office performance. To give an idea of when Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will be available on streaming, the hit film Barbie, which gave Warner Bros. a huge success, hit Max on December 15, around five months after its theatrical release. Meanwhile, Blue Beetle, which tanked at the box office, arrived on Max only around three months after it was released on the big screen.
