Director Wes Ball's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is attracting attention because of its brilliant cast. The iconic 1968 original film and the highly anticipated Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in 2024 represent just two milestones in the expansive narrative of the franchise.

Since the debut of the first movie, based on Pierre Boulle's French novel La Planète des Singes, the series has left an indelible mark on popular culture, some of which have garnered as much acclaim and success as the original.

Another thrilling entry in the series Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, set for release on May 10, 2024, is expected to carry on the story started by Matt Reeves' trilogy in the 2010s.

The official synopsis of the movie on IMDb reads:

"Many years after the reign of Caesar, a young ape goes on a journey that will lead him to question everything he's been taught about the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike."

Main characters in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

While the full cast of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is yet to be disclosed, several significant roles have already been revealed. Owen Teague portrays Noa, the noble young chimp protagonist who opposes the tyrannical reign of Proximus.

Freya Allan stars as Mae, a feral human rescued by Noa, while Peter Macon takes on the role of Raka, a knowledgeable Orangutan and one of Noa's crucial allies. Kevin Durand portrays Proximus Caesar, the despotic ruler of Noa's coastal ape society.


Noa

Owen Teague plays Noa, the protagonist in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Teague gained recognition for his performances in the It duology. His recent films in the past year include Reptile, Eileen, and You Hurt My Feelings.

Noa, an evolved chimpanzee, is highly inquisitive about the world and proficient in speech. He is also shown to be able to ride horses and train birds to assist him during hunts.


Mae

English actress Freya Allan has been cast as Mae in this upcoming film. She is best known for her role as Ciri in the Netflix series The Witcher. A rare human born with the ability to speak in a time when humans have devolved into a primal state, Mae lives hidden amongst other humans but will be forced to embark on a journey alongside her chimpanzee ally, Noa.


Proximus Caesar

Kevin Durand will portray Proximus Caesar, a powerful bonobo king who has corrupted the original Caesar's teachings to create an ape culture fit for warfare.

Proximus dislikes humans and is the main antagonist of the movie. He wants to gather human-made weapons from the bygone era to wage war against the devolved humans.

Though most known for his appearances as Fred J. Dukes in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Martin Keamy in Lost, he has also acted in several television shows, such as Vikings and The Strain.


Raka

Peter Macon portrays Raka, an intelligent and morally upright orangutan who aligns himself with Noa in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The American actor is best known for his portrayal of Lt. Commander Bortus in the Fox/Hulu series The Orville (2017–present).

Being an evolved orangutan, Raka can speak fluently and can be considered well-read. He will be seen guiding the protagonists and filling in the gaps in their understanding of the shared history of humans and apes.


Trevathan

William H. Macy joins the cast of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes as Trevathan, a human within Proximus Caesar's clan. Not much is known about the character yet, but it can be speculated Trevathan might be another rare human with the ability to speak, like Mae.

The actor earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Fargo and has garnered six Emmy nominations for his portrayal of Frank Gallagher in Shameless.


Koro

In the upcoming film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Neil Sandilands takes on the role of Koro, a respected chimpanzee elder from Noa's tribe. A member of the Eagle Clan, Koro is Noa's father and has similar capabilities shown by the latter.

The South African actor and filmmaker has appeared in various roles, such as CW's The Flash, portraying the character Clifford DeVoe/The Thinker, and as General Abbott in the Netflix series Sweet Tooth.


Other characters in the upcoming film

Travis Jeffery and Lydia Peckham join the cast of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes as Anaya and Soona, respectively. Jeffery portrays Anaya, a chimpanzee who serves as a friend to the protagonist, Noa.

Meanwhile, Peckham takes on the role of Soona, a female chimpanzee and another ally of Noa. Additionally, Eka Darville, Ras-Samuel Weld A'abzgi, Sara Wiseman, and Dichen Lachman have been cast in unspecified roles in the upcoming film.


An overview of the movie

Reeves' trilogy portrayed the ongoing struggle between humans and apes for control of the world. It revolved around Caesar, played by Andy Serkis, who led his ape species in a fight against oppressive humans to protect their ecosystems and way of life.

The upcoming movie, which is set 300 years after Caesar's death, aims to get deeper into the changing relationships between apes and humans. As a sequel to its predecessors, this new film introduces new characters and story threads inside the cinematic universe created.

With a script penned by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison, the movie is set to delve deeper into the rich history of the Planet of the Apes series.
