On June 5, 2025, Sabrina Carpenter released her newest single, Manchild, promising an accompanying music video the following day. The singer had been teasing the project over the past few days, posting pictures and snippets of the song's concept on social media, which featured her in the role of a hitchhiker.
The teaser showed the Feather singer wearing jean shorts, a white shirt, and high heels as she stood by the side of the road with her suitcase, holding out her thumb to signal for a ride from oncoming vehicles.
Manchild—already touted as "song of the summer" by fans and several online publications like Cosmopolitan and Rolling Stone—seemingly follows in the same vein as her 2024 hits Espresso and Please Please Please, as the singer croons, "Man-child/ Why you always come a-running, taking all my loving from me?"
Ahead of the song's release, Sabrina Carpenter took to Instagram to share the inspiration behind her latest musical offering. She revealed that the song was born "on a random Tuesday," not long after she finished recording her Grammy-winning album Short N' Sweet. Carpenter added that she co-wrote the track with Amy Allen and Jack Antonoff, who also produced it.
In her caption, Sabrina Carpenter explained that Manchild would serve as the soundtrack of her "mental montage" when reflecting on "the very confusing and fun young adult years of life." She concluded the post with a thank you to her fans for their support and gave a special shoutout to men for "testing [her]."
"This song became to me something I can look back on that will score the mental montage to the very confusing and fun young adult years of life. it sounds like the song embodiment of a loving eye roll and it feels like a never ending road trip in the summer ! hence why i wanted to give it to you now- so you can stick your head out the car window and scream it all summer long! thank you always and forever for listening. and thank you men for testing me!!" Sabrina Carpenter wrote.
The music video for Manchild is scheduled for release at 10 am Eastern Time.
Sabrina Carpenter teased Manchild through billboard adverts
On June 2, Sabrina Carpenter teased a new project through several billboard adverts, which she posted on social media with the caption, "spotted on interstate-69." One billboard read, "I swear they choose me, I’m not choosing them.” Another featured the word "Amen" across it, while a third simply read, "Hey Men!"
Shortly after, the singer unveiled her newest single, Manchild. The wordings on the billboard were later revealed to contain the lyrics of her song, with Sabrina Carpenter singing in the bridge:
"Oh, I like my boys playing hard to get/ And I like my men all incompetent/ And I swear they choose me, I'm not choosing them/ Amen, hey, men/ Oh, I like my boys playing hard to get (Play hard to get)/ And I like my men all incompetent (Incompetent)/ And I swear they choose me, I'm not choosing them (Not choosing them)/ Amen (Amen), hey, men (Hey, men)."
Several publications, including Variety, reported on the viral speculation that Manchild could be the lead single for the singer's seventh studio album. However, the singer has not revealed any information about an upcoming project at the time of writing this article.
In other news, Sabrina Carpenter is scheduled to headline Barcelona's Primavera Festival on June 6. The festival will take place at the Parc del Fòrum between June 5 and 7, with Charli XCX and Chappell Roan as the other headlining acts.
