Earlier this week, Samuel L. Jackson opened up his role in Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl Halftime performance. Jackson was recently invited to Paloma Faith's Mad Sad Bad podcast (published on Tuesday, June 3), where the subject of Lamar's Halftime show was brought up.

When Faith asked Samuel about his contribution to Kendrick's revolutionary Super Bowl set, the Damaged actor said:

"I didn’t know what they were doing... Well, it was kinda trippy because it wasn’t until dress rehearsal that when I looked up and I looked on that stage and I go, ‘Oh sh*t, that’s a flag. Ah, f**k, we’re being revolutionaries.’ Because I wasn’t listening or paying attention."

According to Billboard, the GNX rapper's Super Bowl set, where he performed 11 songs in 13 minutes, aimed to depict Black America, with Samuel L. Jackson taking on the role of a "Greek chorus" who narrates the action occurring on the center stage.

Jackson played a somewhat similar role in his 2015 film, Chi-Raq (where he played Dolmedes), for which he was recognized by filmmaker Spike Lee. The Glass actor has a strong connection to the American civil rights movement and served as one of the ushers for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at his funeral.

Speaking about how he frequently found himself in situations like that, Jackson told Paloma:

"Something about me or my persona has put me in the right place at the right time… in a lot of different moments in my life. And I have to accept that that’s what I’m meant to be sometimes; an agent of change, whether I know it or not."

Further expressing gratitude for his influential position, Samuel added:

"And to be proud of it and to know God has placed me in a place that I can be influential... I wanna be on the right side of history in terms of what’s going on, and sometimes it’s not by choice."

Besides Samuel L. Jackson, the other artists featured in Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl Halftime show (on February 2, 2025) include tennis player Serena Williams, record producer Mustard, and Lamar's latest collaborator, SZA. Their set became the most-watched Halftime show in the history of the Super Bowl.

Samuel L. Jackson's thoughts on his role in Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl set come as the Money Trees rapper has broken an all-time Billboard record.

His collaborative track with SZA, Luther, has spent the most weeks at the top of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, where it has maintained its lead for over 23 weeks as the no.1 (and 27 weeks in total).

The song also spent 13 weeks at the top of Billboard's Hot 100 chart, and is currently occupying the fifth position.
