The Boston Bruins appointed Marco Sturm as their new head coach on Thursday, welcoming the former forward back to the organization. Sturm will make his NHL head coaching debut, having spent the past three seasons as coach of the Los Angeles Kings’ AHL affiliate.
Sturm steps in for interim coach Joe Sacco, who took over after Jim Montgomery was unexpectedly let go in November. Bruins former captain Patrice Bergeron reacted to bringing his former teammate behind the bench, saying:
"I think it's great, I'm very happy for him," Sturm said. (per NHL.com) "He was an incredible teammate, and I'm not surprised he pursued coaching. He has a passion for the game, and I know he's going to do an amazing job."
Bergeron said that many people have influenced his career over the years, and Marco is definitely one of them. He went on to praise Sturm's character, energy and commitment to the game.
“He cares for the game and cares for his teammates, his energy is contagious and this is well deserved. I wish him all the best and I know he's going to do great. I want the team to be successful and for him to do well."
Sturm spent five seasons in Boston from 2005 to 2010, tallying 193 points in 302 games.
After hanging up his skates in 2012, Marco Sturm wasted no time moving into coaching. He took the reins of Germany’s national team and guided them to a surprise silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics. He later joined the NHL ranks as an assistant coach with the Kings from 2018 to 2022.
GM Don Sweeney on 30th head coach of the Bruins, Marco Sturm
General Manager Don Sweeney said that the team wanted a coach who could keep their defensive strength, elevate the offense and lead with strong communication and player respect.
"Marco impressed us at every step with his preparation, clarity, and passion," Sweeney said. "His path, playing for multiple NHL teams, coaching internationally, and leading at both the AHL and NHL levels, has shaped a well-rounded coach who's earned this opportunity.”
Sweeney feels Marco Sturm has a deep understanding of the Bruins' identity and what the team means to its fans. His energy, principles, and hard-nosed style of hockey make him a strong fit to lead the franchise into its next chapter.
