Edmonton Oilers winger Trent Frederic shared his thoughts about the disparity in penalty calls compared to the Florida Panthers in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final.
Frederic was involved in a key moment when his cross-check on Panthers' Sam Bennett sparked a line brawl in a game that ended with 140 penalty minutes, the fourth-highest total in Stanley Cup Finals history.
Frederic acknowledged that every team feels biased against their opponents. He noted that players on the opposing side likely have similar complaints, making it challenging to judge fairly.
"I don't know. Just play. Just play in the whistles. We're biased, right? Everyone who plays against other teams is biased. So it's kind of hard to—you can say that all you want, but if you're on the other team, I'm sure you're saying the same thing," he said.
The Edmonton Oilers amassed 85 penalty minutes in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final, the third-highest total by a team in a Cup Final game. In contrast, the Florida Panthers accumulated 55 penalty minutes.
During the game, Trent Frederic received a two-minute minor penalty for cross-checking Sam Bennett and was later assessed a 10-minute game misconduct. The Oilers were blown out 6-1 by the Panthers in Game 3.
Trent Frederic's teammate Jake Wallman fined for unsportsmanlike conduct
Trent Frederic's teammate, Jake Wallman, was fined $10,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct in Game 3. He received two separate $5,000 fines: one for a roughing incident against Matthew Tkachuk and another for spraying water on the Florida Panthers' bench late in the second period.
Wallman explained that his actions were intentional and noted that he was aware of the cameras capturing the incidents.
"I obviously did that for a reason," he explained. "Won't go into the details, just gamesmanship, I guess. Just gotta there's cameras everywhere."
Meanwhile, the Edmonton Oilers won Game 1 with a 4-3 overtime win at Rogers Place. They've since lost twice on the bounce, trailing the Panthers 2-1 in the series. Game 4 marks a must-win contest for the Oilers against the formidable Panthers. The puck drops on Thursday at Amerant Bank Arena.
