Patrik Laine trade rumours

The Montreal Canadiens may be interested in acquiring Columbus Blue Jackets star forward Patrik Laine, according to TVA Sports. Laine signed a four-year, $34.8 million contract that includes an annual cap hit of $8.7 million and lasts until the 2025–26 season.

Moreover, he entered the NHL/NHLPA player support program in January to address health concerns.

The 26-year-old forward has only managed to score six goals and provide three assists this season. However, Patrik Laine has gained a reputation as one of the leading goal scorers in the NHL, especially when he is at his best, reaching a career peak of 44 goals in his second season.

The Canadiens have the cap space to absorb Patrik Laine's contract and could afford to take a gamble on the former 40-goal scorer. If Laine fails to regain his form in Montreal, the team could simply let him walk as a free agent in two years.

However, the spotlight and pressure of playing in Montreal could also have a negative impact on the winger.

Any trade would most likely require the Canadiens to pay a high price. There is also a likelihood that Laine has Montreal on his 10-team no-trade list. Don Waddell, the Blue Jackets' new general manager, may want to keep Laine and see how the next season goes before making a huge move.

The Montreal Canadians are at the top of all Canada-based NHL teams with 3,556 wins.

Former Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen expressed his full support for Laine entering NHL/NHLPA player support program.

“Patrik has our complete support, and our sole concern is his well-being,” Kekalainen said in a statement. “Out of respect for Patrik, we will have no further comment.”

Blue Jackets coach Pascal Vincent said:

“We care a whole lot about Patrik. We’re going to miss this man for the time being. He’s a big deal for us and we’re going to do everything we can to help him. That program is there because it’s valued. It’s a great thing for the players.”
“Those guys are hockey players. That’s what they do for a living. but they’re people first. We’re going to miss him on the ice, but taking care of our people is No. 1.”

Patrik Laine didn't go into specifics about the problems he is facing. From his words, it's evident that he is focusing on taking care of his mental health at this time.
