Podcaster Alex Cooper recently opened up about her early life and the foundational influences that shaped her creative career. In her new Hulu documentary series, Call Her Alex, the Call Her Daddy podcast host highlighted how her family—particularly her father—played a formative role in shaping her creative journey.
As per an article by Screen Rant, the podcaster revealed in the docu-series that growing up she was familiar with the workings of a camera because of her father's field of work. She added that her father had "introduced cameras into [their] home" and regularly recorded the family’s everyday life and sporting events.
Bryan Cooper, Alex Cooper’s father, worked as a sports television producer for the NHL team Philadelphia Flyers, producing the televised broadcasts of their games.
Referring to her father’s profession, the podcaster shared that his job deeply influenced her and that early fascination drove her, even as a child, to start filming comedy skits and impersonations (as per Elle).
"My dad would say 'go to camera A, go to camera B, let’s roll B roll.' I was enamored with that world," she remarked.
In the docuseries, Cooper also recalled how she sometimes accompanied her father to work. She would sit in the back of the control room, wearing her own mini headset, and observe her father direct the live feed. This experience, she explained, instilled the idea in her that:
"When you are seeing something or have a vision, film it."
What else do we know about Alex Cooper’s father, Bryan Cooper?

According to a People magazine article dated June 10, 2025, Bryan Cooper, the father of Call Her Daddy podcast host Alex Cooper, spent more than three decades in the world of sports television.
Bryan Cooper served as the executive producer and director for Flyers Hockey in Philadelphia from 1989 until 2023, shaping the coverage of the team for nearly 34 years.
In addition to his longstanding role with the Flyers, Bryan also held notable producer positions at major networks like NBC Sports Network and ESPN, further cementing his place in the industry.
In an interview with FlyingFishHockey.com in October 2023, Bryan reflected on his decision to retire, revealing that the isolation brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic played a key role. He explained that the loss of in-person interaction ultimately pushed him to step away from the career he had devoted so many years to.
"When the pandemic hit, everything changed because nobody in the league traveled. There was such a family atmosphere, both with the broadcasters and with the team. Everything has changed now...the broadcasters, they travel. The producers and directors, we don’t. And that to me was a huge piece in me deciding I had had enough," he explained.
Alex Cooper opens up about why she didn’t want her father to walk her down the aisle

As per an article by Vogue dated April 24, 2024, Alex Cooper gave an interview to the outlet where she detailed several aspects of her wedding to Matthew "Matt" Kaplan and revealed why her father didn’t walk her down the aisle.
During the interview, Cooper shared how much she admired her parents’ marriage, admitting that she once believed she might never marry because of the high bar they had set. That changed when she met her now-husband, film producer Matt Kaplan.
However, she explained that although she was set on marrying Matt Kaplan, she did not plan to follow conventional marriage traditions. She further added that despite her close bond with her father, she made a firm decision for her April 2024 wedding: she chose not to be walked down the aisle by Bryan Cooper.
"At the beginning of wedding planning, I really rejected the concept of being walked down by a man to be handed to another man," Alex Cooper said.
Cooper noted that this decision stemmed from her views on tradition rather than her relationship with her father.
"Although to clarify, I have such an incredible relationship with my father and both of my parents—it wasn’t about that. To me personally, I just never loved that tradition. It’s old and antiquated," Alex Cooper explained.
Cooper then shared that her mother, Laurie, had also walked herself down the aisle, unaccompanied by a man. Therefore, what she chose to do "in a sense" was to create her "own tradition for the women" in her family.
Nonetheless, Bryan Cooper still played a standout role at his daughter’s reception. In one of the more memorable moments from the wedding, he surprised guests by announcing that everyone was expected to run into the ocean in their formalwear.
Cooper noted that although she only expected her "close friends to join in," to her shock "almost the entire wedding took charge to the ocean," including "parents, grandparents, family, and friends."
Apart from hosting her Call Her Daddy podcast, Alex Cooper is also focused on expanding her media ventures. She runs her podcast network, The Unwell Network, and co-founded the media company Trending with her husband, Matt Kaplan. Her latest docuseries, Call Her Alex, was released on Hulu on June 10, 2025.
