TLC's reality show Sister Wives documents the lives of Kody Brown and his four wives - Robyn, Meri, Janelle, and Christine - as they navigate their polyamorous lifestyle. The show's 19th season focuses on the women rebuilding their lives after separating from Kody.
Recent episodes have featured emotional moments, including Kody's tearful farewell to Meri as she departed Flagstaff, and Christine sharing the news of her engagement to David with their children.
The latest episode, The Eleventh Hour, aired on November 24. Janelle Brown expressed her frustration on the latest episode of Sister Wives, stating that she's fed up with being blamed for the family's financial issues, particularly by Kody Brown.
Janelle revealed that her top emotional pressure point is financial responsibility. She emphasized the importance of financial security and being financially savvy.
Janelle expressed her anger and frustration, stating that she was unaware of Kody's actions. She felt betrayed that he was speaking negatively about her behind her back, sharing false stories with others.
“For me, financial security and being smart financially is really, really important. So, he’s trying to pin everything on me. It makes me so mad because I didn’t know it. He was doing it behind my back. He kept telling everybody these stories and I’m like, ‘F*cking hell,’” stated Janelle.
Sister Wives' Janelle clarifies her position on the Browns' financial matters
Janelle confided in Christine Brown, revealing that her conversation with Meri Brown in the previous episode of Sister Wives made her realize that Kody had been undermining her regarding the family's finances.
Janelle clarified that she never controlled the family's money, instead only recording expenses and sending them to the accountant. Christine supported Janelle's claims, stating that if Janelle had indeed controlled the finances, their situation would be vastly different.
Kody, however, implied that Janelle might have had more control over the finances than she admitted. Kody instead suggested that Meri's suspicions about Janelle's control over the family finances might be valid.
Kody implied that his other wives recall Janelle being in charge of the finances.
On Sister Wives, he claimed to have had some influence over how the money was spent, stating that he provided guidance on financial decisions.
According to Kody, all family members had access to the joint account, and he portrayed their financial management as a collaborative effort.
“It’s funny, my other wives remember Janelle controlling the money. I sort of guided where the money went. We all had access to the account. Listen, we were a family working together and we did the best we could,” said Kody in a confessional.
Janelle's statements came amid an ongoing dispute with Kody over the family's finances, particularly regarding the Coyote Pass property. The family had purchased the land with the intention of building separate homes for each wife.
However, after Christine left Kody in 2021, she returned her share of the land and kept the money from selling her Arizona home.
Janelle and Meri have retained their shares in the property, with Janelle expressing concerns about paying it off on Sister Wives. Janelle has even offered to let Kody buy her out so she can move out of state and distance herself from the situation.
Janelle accused Kody of trying to make her the scapegoat for the family's financial problems. She claimed that Kody's actions are part of a larger pattern, citing his past comments about Christine as an example.
Christine corroborated Janelle's account on Sister Wives, stating that Kody was the one who controlled the family's finances. She explained that all their money was put into a joint fund, and Kody would write checks for expenses.
Meri, however, remains unsure about who to believe, caught between Janelle and Kody's differing accounts.
Meri and Kody's marriage officially ended in a legal divorce, although they remained spiritually connected until 2023. Christine ended her relationship with Kody in 2021, and Janelle ended their 30-year relationship in 2022.
