Lulu is a Rhinoceros may not be the first thing one thinks of when they hear the name Jason Flom. The legendary music industry executive has been associated with the most iconic bands during his illustrious career, from Atlantic Records to the Capitol Music Group.
What brought him to Lulu Is a Rhinoceros— first the book, and then the Apple TV+ original special— is his desire to make the world a better place. He also relished the opportunity to work with his daughter, Allison Flom.
In an exclusive interview with Sportskeeda, Flom highlighted the motivation for Lulu Is a Rhinoceros, so many years into his illustrious career.
"My dad told my brother and I when we were kids… do whatever you want to do, try to be the best at it but just make the world a better place. Cuz that’s the only definition of success that matters. And I realized I was never going to be the best guitar player."

That said, Flom always believed that he had a knack for creativity, and he translated the same into Lulu Is a Rhinoceros.
"Look, we all do different things as we grow. And I’ve always had a creative streak. I wanted to be a rockstar. I wanted to be a musician. But I wasn’t talented enough."
How Allison Flom came to be associated with Lulu Is a Rhinoceros
The bond between father and daughter was immediately obvious when the interview got underway with constant, hilarious banter. Jason Flom mentioned how he asked his daughter, Allison, to be a part of the project.
"Not surprisingly, my daughter is creative. And she’s actually studied writing, and has been a writer since she was a little kid," he recalled.
Jason continued:
"So, I called her up when I had the idea to do 'Lulu Is a Rhinoceros' and said, ‘do you want to write a book? And create a little hero for kids who feel left out, put down or bullied? By the way they look, by the way they feel, by the way they are?’"
Allison Flom, who has a background in comedy herself, jumped at the opportunity to work with her dad on such an inspiring book, and subsequently, the special:
"She was like 'let’s go dad.' I was like 'okay.' And that’s how it started," Jason said.
Despite the fact that Jason Flom never got to electrify big stages with the power of the riff, the Lulu is a Rhinoceros Executive Producer has always been instrumental in helping others achieve their dreams. He likened the same to this project.
"But I always enjoyed the creative process itself. I like being on the other side and helping people with their creative process. And helping with the marketing. So, this kinda feels natural to me that I came up with this idea to do this book," he said.
Upon urging from his daughter, Flom mentioned some of the iconic artists he's worked with.
"Everyone from Sebastian Bach and Stone Temple Pilots and Tori Amos in the early days, to Paramore and Lorde and so many more. Matchbox Twenty etc. etc. Trans Siberian-Orchestra, I love that one," he stated.
