There have been some incredible counters into finishers over the past few years

Every wrestler has to have a finisher in order to be taken seriously. Some of these finishers become more well-known than the actual wrestler, much like Randy Orton's RKO, whilst others are just there to end a match and there is nothing pretty about them.

Over the past few years, there have been a number of times where wrestlers have been able to reverse moves into finishers, in such a way that the watching crowd has given them a standing ovation for their efforts.

Wrestling has seen some of the greatest reversals over the past few years and the business as a whole seems to be picking up its game when it comes to these athletic statements.

#10 John Cena counters The Rock

When John Cena stepped into the ring against The Rock back at WrestleMania 28, the match was billed as "Once In A Lifetime" and it lived up to the hype.

The duo then decided to have a rematch a year later in the main event of WrestleMania 29 with John Cena finally coming out on top. That night, Cena pulled off one of his best reversals when The Rock seemingly had the match won.

The Great One went for The Rock Bottom but somehow Cena was able to counter it into an Attitude Adjustment to win the match and his Championship back from The Rock.

Over the past few years, Cena has been showing off a number of new counters into his famous finisher, which just goes to show, even after 15 years in the business, Cena is always looking for new ways to send his fans home happy.

#9 Michelle McCool's leap of faith

When Michelle McCool began using the Faith Breaker, the WWE Universe knew that she had taken the move from AJ Styles and even though he was flattered that she wanted to use it, the fans found it hard to comprehend.

Despite this, Michelle managed to pull off a number of incredible counters into the finisher, including one against Gail Kim on an episode of Monday Night Raw.

Gail Kim looked to be going for a jackknife pin before Michelle planted her with her own pin attempt that later turned into the Faith Breaker for the win. It was an impressive combination of moves to finish up their match and it showed that the women could shock fans just as much as the men.

#8 Carlito's backstabbing best

Carlitos legacy is now living on in the WWE thanks to his nephew and his brother who are performing as The Colon's on SmackDown Live, but it seems that some of the things that Carlito managed to do in the ring whilst his was still employed by WWE, still live long in many fans memories.

Back in 2009, Carlito looked as though he was about to lose a match to John Morrison when he pulled off one of the greatest reversals of his career. He managed to turn a suplex into the backstabber and secure the win over the former Tag Team Champion, which turned out to be a much-needed win for Carlito at a time when Carlito and his brother were feuding with The Miz and John Morrison over the Bella Twins.

#7 Shawn Michaels Counters the Attitude Adjustment

Shawn Michaels is widely considered to be the best wrestler in WWE history by many of the WWE Universe and when it comes to some of the reversals that he managed to pull off throughout his career, it is easy to see why.

Micheals and John Cena were part of a deeply personal feud back in 2007 which lead to a match between the duo at WrestleMania 23, despite the fact that they were Tag Team Champions.

In the midst of all the chaos between the two former World Champions, Michaels was able to pull off one of the best reversals of his career, when he landed on his feet from Cena's AA attempt and hit Sweet Chin Music to win the match.

#6 Seth Rollins' Spear into a Pedigree

Seth Rollins had been out of action for more than seven months when he returned to WWE at Extreme Rules back in 2015, but the former World Champion didn't compete in a match until the Money in the Bank event a few weeks later.

Rollins took on Roman Reigns in the hope that he would reclaim the Championship he never lost, and pulled out all of the stops to conquer The Big Dog. One of the best moments of the match saw Rollins counter Roman's famous Spear finisher into a Pedigree and the crowd thought he had the match won.

Of course, Rollins did go on to win the match and reclaim his Championship only for Dean Ambrose to cash in the briefcase that he had won earlier in the night and take the title back away from him.

#5 Codebreaker Into Dirty Deeds

Dean Ambrose and Chris Jericho had a fantastic feud back in 2016 that led all the way up to their Ambrose Asylum match at Extreme Rules.

Whilst Ambrose is usually not noted for his wrestling ability since he has stated himself a number of times that he usually just steps in the ring and hopes for the best, even he was able to pull off an incredible reversal on Jericho when the pressure was on.

During an episode of Monday Night Raw last year, Ambrose took on Chris Jericho in a one-on-one match and as Jericho went for the Codebreaker to end the match, Ambrose was able to counter with the Dirty Deeds to have his hand raised and take the momentum in what was a personal feud between the two men.

#4 Air RKO

Evan Bourne was known as an incredible high flyer in WWE for a number of years but since his departure, the former Tag Team Champion is best remembered for his part in one of the greatest finisher counters of all time.

Evan Bourne was about to perform his Shooting Star Press to Randy Orton on an episode of Monday Night Raw when Orton was able to catch him in mid-air and deliver an RKO. The timing that this counter must have taken in order to pull it off correctly and just how dangerous it could have been if this had gone wrong is why it is still considered to be one of the greatest reversals of all time.

#3 Moonsault into a Tombstone Piledriver

The Undertaker's WrestleMania streak is something that The Deadman held on to for more than two decades and at one point he was able to defend his streak at the highest of levels.

Shawn Michaels stepped up to challenge Undertaker for the first time at WrestleMania 25 and the duo put on one of the matches of the year at the Showcase Of The Immortals.

Michaels was able to kick out of the tombstone earlier in the match, so Undertaker knew that he had to up his game if he was hoping to defeat Michaels and maintain his streak. Michaels climbed the turnbuckles near the end of the match and went for a moonsault that incredibly saw The Undertaker catch him and deliver a Tombstone with authority this time to finally defeat The Heartbreak Kid.

#2 RKO into The Armbar

Randy Orton has become famous over the past few years for his ridiculous reversals into RKO's from some of the most interesting positions. These counters allowed #RKOOutOfNowhere to become a top trend for WWE a few years ago and an internet sensation at one point.

It seems that Orton was on the receiving end of a fantastic counter on an episode of SmackDown Live earlier this year when Shinsuke Nakamura was able to counter the RKO into an Armbar that almost forced Orton to tap.

This counter took what was a below-par match from both stars into something that many fans called an instant classic, but it was Nakamura who ended up walking out as the winner of the match.

#1 Curb Stomp into an RKO

Seth Rollins will remember WrestleMania 31 as the event where he was finally able to cash in his Money in the Bank contract to become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion for the very first time, but many fans will remember it for the incredible counter that Randy Orton managed to pull off in their match a few hours earlier.

Rollins lost his scheduled match to Orton at the event after what was one of the best counters that the WWE Universe has ever seen as Rollins went for the Curb Stomp but was thrown up in the air by Orton and caught into an RKO.

It must have taken so many attempts to get this right beforehand and it ended up being one of the best moments of the show. Sadly, this was the last time the WWE Universe saw the Curb Stomp following his victory in the main event, so there was no chance of a repeat performance as their feud continued following the event.
