Owens' first Universal Title reign was fun to watch
Finn Balor getting the honor of becoming the first-ever WWE Universal Champion was short-lived when he was forced to relinquish the title one day after winning it due to an injury. Time away from WWE meant Balor could not have a legitimate reign. WWE was forced to change plans on the fly. Kevin Owens benefited from this with the biggest push of his career.

WWE selected Owens since the desire from the new title was to elevate a new star on the Raw brand early into the first few months of the brand's split. Owens would have a lengthy reign as the top champion on Raw from August 2016 to March 2017. He had impressive matches against Seth Rollins along with humorous segments during his friendship with Chris Jericho. The title reign had its ups and downs, but Owens certainly proved he could entertain at a top level.
WWE's plans to push NXT talent was appreciated here and Owens got the better deal.
