The Intercontinental Championship wasn't originally scheduled to be defended at Extreme Rules, but it was later added to the kick-off show and Nakamura defeated Finn Balor to become the new Intercontinental Champion. While The Artist won the US Title before, this is his first Intercontinental Title in WWE. Since Balor was attacked by Bray Wyatt on RAW, the rivalry will not extend after Extreme Rules.

The WWE Universe was eagerly waiting to see Shinsuke's next challenger, and it looks like we know who it will be. In a backstage interview on SmackDown Live, Ali confronted Nakamura and WWE certainly gave us a hint of the new rivalry on the blue brand.

There is no denying that Ali is an exceptional performer and he could be an ideal challenger for the current Intercontinental Champion. Considering Ali hasn't been involved in a new storyline, he is still looking for a new opponent. Ali's last match was at Money in the Bank where he competed in the Money in the Bank ladder match. Judging by the dexterity of Ali and Nakamura, they could offer an extraordinary rivalry.
