Some might think that Tag Team wrestling is a lost art in today's WWE. In some ways it is difficult to disagree with that notion, considering the belts often find themselves relegated to pre-show matches and have champions who do not win too many matches, such as The Revival for instance. However, this hasn't always been the case. In fact, tag teams used to be extremely important drawing cards for the promotion.
Tag Team wrestling has always been a staple of wrestling promotions worldwide, with teams of two or more competing against each other for the honour of being recognised as World Tag Team Champions.
Believe it or not, but WWE have had, at one point or another, a whopping seven active Tag Team Championships in their company (not including the Ladies version from the 1980s or the current Women's Tag Team belts).
They were/are:
WWWF United States Tag Team Championship
WWF International Tag Team Championship
WWF/World Tag Team Championship
WWE Tag Team Championship
RAW Tag Team Championship
Smackdown Tag Team Championship
NXT Tag Team Championship
What all these championships have in common, is that a bunch of legendary tag teams dating back six decades have competed for them. Awesome tandems and Hall of Fame acts such as The Dudley Boyz, The Hart Foundation, The Valiant Brothers and others have competed for the straps alongside the likes of The British Bulldogs, Edge and Christian, The New Age Outlaws, The Shield, The New Day and The Hardy Boyz.
Some of these reigns were inevitably quite short whilst others have been epic in length. This slideshow looks back at all aforementioned versions of WWE's Tag Team titles to remember the three longest reigning Tag Team Champions of all time under the WWE banner.
Without any further ado, let's see who the three longest reigning Tag Team Champions of all time are.
#3 The Fabulous Kangaroos (WWWF United States Tag Team Championship, 409 days)
Unknown to many modern WWE fans, The Fabulous Kangaroos were a very famous and talented act that graced WWE rings when the company was known as the World Wide Wrestling Federation, back in the 1950s and 1960s.
At that time, WWE's premier Tag Team titles were the United States Tag Team Championships, which the Kangaroo's held on three occasions. Their longest reign, which lasted a whopping 409 days, began when they defeated the team of Johnny Valentine and Buddy Rogers (who would later become the inaugural WWE Champion) and finally ended when they dropped the belts to Valentine and his new partner, Bob Ellis.
The Kangaroos were enshrined into the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2003, but are conspicuous by their absence in the WWE Hall of Fame.
#2 Demolition (WWF Tag Team Championship, 478 days)
You won't hear Demolition mentioned on WWE television very often.
This Rock 'n' Wrestling era tag team was created as WWE's version of the NWA's mega successful Road Warriors, consisting of Hawk and Animal, but grew into an astonishing and effective tandem in their own right.
However, since their WWE departure, they have been at odds with the company, owing to their part in a concussion lawsuit filed against WWE.
However, the three-time former Tag Team Champions are still well revered for their 478-days reign as champions, which lasted all the way from Wrestlemania IV, when they upended Strikeforce (Rick Martel and Tito Santana), to July 1989, when they dropped the straps to The Brain Busters, consisting of Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard.
It was a record that stood for over two decades, before it was finally surpassed by our next team.
#1 The New Day (WWE RAW Tag Team Championships, 483 days)
The New Day is one of the most honoured tag teams of all time. The triumvirate have won five WWE Tag Team Championships in total: two Raw Tag Team titles and three Smackdown Tag Team titles.
Few expected this level of success out of the team, consisting of three mid carders, Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods and Big E, when they formed way back in the summer of 2014.
Initially, they were presented as a baby-face team that was based upon black gospel groups. However, their act was maligned by fans and soundly booed each time they made their entrance.
Capitalising on the discord, WWE turned them heel and the stable have not looked back since.
Their most successful title run was their second Raw Tag Team title run. They defeated The Prime Time Players at the 2015 Money in the Bank event and held onto the gold until the 2016 Roadblock: End of the Line event.
With their 483 day reign, the trio have set a record that is likely to stand for decades to come.
