Though he won the Tag Team Titles multiple times as a New Day member, he never achieved significant success as a singles superstar.

Kofi Kingston participated in a Gauntlet match before Elimination Chamber where he pinned the WWE Champion Daniel Bryan and Samoa Joe, before being eliminated by AJ Styles. He carried the momentum at Elimination Chamber as he lasted thirty-one minutes inside the steel structure. Considering his performance at Elimination Chamber, he became the number contender of Daniel Bryan, but Vince McMahon changed his mind when he replaced Kingston with Kevin Owens.
