McIntyre made his WWE debut in 2007, but his first tenure was substandard. He won the Intercontinental title and the tag team titles once each during his first run. WWE released him in 2014.

Subsequently, he earned his name in the indie circuit where he improved himself. He returned to WWE in 2017, and he won the NXT title.

He started to gain popularity in NXT, as he provided some top-notch matches. As a matter of fact, McIntyre became the first superstar to win the NXT title after having previous experience on the main roster. He also became the first Scottish superstar to win the NXT title.

McIntyre made his main roster return after WrestleMania 34. He has won the tag team titles with Dolph Ziggler, and they had a great rivalry with the Shield. Dean Ambrose turned on Seth Rollins, with McIntyre inspiring Ambrose to turn heel.
