3 Reasons why Finn Balor should go to Wrestlemania as the Universal Champion

For a month or so now WWE has tried to encourage and alter the dismal downward trajectory that it has been following. It seems that continuously poor ratings have been the only consistency the organisation has achieved. It was clear to most ardent fans that the shows were stagnant and long-term issues were contributing to the lull in retainable viewers.

We have had a part-time universal champion in Brock Lesnar for near on 70% of the time that the WWE Universal Championship has been held. In that time the belt has probably only been seen on TV a few dozen times. Additions to the roster have been slow and cumbersome, and a lot of storylines have often become quite predictable, or just largely pointless.

But with the WWE’s promise that was issued by the McMahon’s and Triple H, we could be starting to see an upturn in quality performances, storylines and favourable bookings, all ultimately leading to positive ratings and enjoyment for the fans.

One deserving individual to gain success from this is the Demon King, Finn Balor. Extremely popular within the WWE universe and unfortunate with his long-term absence and poor booking upon his return, Balor has secured a chance at getting to the ‘Showcase of the immortals’ with Gold around his waist.

For whatever reason, Finn Balor has received this major push, it makes sense to discuss exactly why Finn should bet on headlining Wrestlemania.

1: Finn deserves to receive his lost time as Universal Champion

One of the best booking decisions in the last few years from the WWE was having ‘new boy’ Finn Balor beating not just WWE’s ‘Big Dog’ Roman Reigns, but also ‘The Architect’ Seth Rollins.

Both of whom were a safe pair of hands to brand as the inaugural Universal Champion. But thankfully WWE mixed it up, and gave it to Finn Balor, much to many people’s delight. Of course, it wasn’t to be, with the Demon King suffering a severe shoulder injury while wrestling Seth Rollins on the night he won the championship.

Two and a half years on, Balor has not really recovered the impressive hype he arrived on. He has been poorly booked and has lingered in the mid-card for too long. But now could be his chance at redemption. Allowing Balor to claim back the gold, and also from his most lethal adversary so far in WWE, would create a resurgence for a new exciting era under the Demon King which has only been dreamt about thus far.

2: Brock Lesnar should not compete for Gold at Wrestlemania

After a long hiatus beyond his first run in the WWE, the Beast Incarnate returned to our screens in 2012 on an episode of Raw, much to everyone’s delight as he added more misery to John Cena, who lost to The Rock the night before at Wrestlemania.

It seemed the entire WWE universe was excited that the Beast was back where he started. But gradually over the years, his support has reached an all-time low.

Now if you are no stranger to the WWE, you will know why. Being a part-time universal champion for nearly 600 days since it was established has annoyed a lot of the Universe, and I am sure no one forgives him for ending the Deadman’s streak either. Ironically, for a person who doesn’t show up that often, he is over utilised.

As the WWE tries to change its course, it would seem they now realise Brock Lesnar’s reign at the top is stagnant, and the decision makers would see it fitting that his reign ends on the grandest stage of them all. However, many believe he has had his vast share of WrestleMania moments, and that its time to see some established fresher faces competing for the title, with Finn being one of them.

Let's have another dream match. Styles vs Nakamura was a fantastic showcase for wrestling. Why not this year have Finn square off against ‘The Architect’ Seth Rollins, or bring the ‘Scottish Psychopath’ Drew McIntyre to the forefront of WWE monsters?

3: The ultimate event to kickstart the Balor Club

Finn Balor needs to reach his potential and form the next stable to guide the WWE into a new era.

Before the Demon King’s move to the WWE, NJPW was where he found his name, and also created one of the most well-known factions in wrestling history, ‘The Bullet Club’.

Since then, fans have speculated time and again when this might translate into a full-blown outfit in the WWE. There has been plenty of hints. There was the reuniting with Gallows and Anderson, and even connections with AJ Styles. Alongside that, the Balor club was established, but so far it seems Balor has been the only member, of which it has been nothing more than a merchandising opportunity.

If Balor went to WrestleMania as the champion, it would be the perfect opportunity to form a faction within the WWE that could disrupt the landscape far beyond what The Nexus or The Shield could muster. Just imagine, Gallows and Anderson returning to form, AJ Styles fills the ranks, and dare it be said, could Kenny Omega be an integral part of such a storyline?

WWE’s plan is always to keep the audience guessing, and it would appear they have stepped up their game. All we can hope for is that we have an unexpected and exciting journey along the Road to WrestleMania and beyond.
