Before it's revival through the Cruiserweight Classic, the WWE and WCW both had a belt for their lighter wrestlers. The WCW Cruiserweight division, in particular, was famous for being full of incredibly gifted wrestlers like Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho, Rey Mysterio, Juventud Guerrera, Billy Kidman, Brian Pillman, and Dean Malenko. However, when the WCW was purchased by the WWE the Cruiserweight title was merged with the WWF's Light Heavyweight title, a lot of the legacy of the belt was lost.

Despite the WCW Cruiserweight roster being full of male talent, it didn't stop the promotion from handing the title to females on the roster. Madusa, formerly known as Alundra Blayze in the WWF, was the first woman to win the title after beating Evan Karagias at the Starrcade 1999.

Daffney would be the next woman to win the title, first becoming co-champion with Crowbar after defeating former champion Chris Candido and his valet, Tammy Sytch, in a mixed-gender tag team match for the title. Daffney would later defeat Crowbar thanks to interference from Candido to become the outright champion.

Finally, Chavo Guerrero would be the first WWE Cruiserweight champion to lose his belt to a woman. Holding an open challenge for the title on an episode of Smackdown in May 2004, which was answered by Jacqueline, who defeated Chavo after hitting him with a low blow while the referee was distracted.

Female Champions: Madusa, Daffney (WCW), Jacqueline (WWE)
