Hardcore fans of the WWE already know that really twisted storylines are no surprise in the world of sports entertainment, but often over the last few years, Vince McMahon's strange storylines have left people in distaste, with him often playing out seemingly sick or bizarre fantasies.
WWE routinely showcases weird, wacky, and entirely inappropriate angles and often even insinuates controversial things such as rape in their stories. Even though the storylines are entirely distasteful at times, the blame can't entirely be pinned on the writers because sometimes the fans may play a part in the role of where the direction of the storyline goes
However, there have been a few storylines that have caused a lot of distaste and managed to actually damage to the reputation of WWE because of the absolutely terrible storyline they were made to follow. Some of the couples involved in such storylines are discussed ahead.
#4 John Cena and AJ Lee
AJ Lee is considered one of the most successful female performers in recent history due to the fact that fans just seemed to connect with her and she has entered prominent storylines with the main event male superstars. AJ has had on-air relationships with CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler, and Kane, but the worst was her short-lived pairing with John Cena.
For two superstars that outclass others, the two had no chemistry whatsoever and every segment they shared resulted in bad television. Luckily, WWE saw it coming and decided to have Lee turn on Cena in a PPV main event to align with Ziggler.
For two dynamic performers, AJ and Cena just didn’t seem comfortable being a couple and it certainly showed on camera.
Off the screen, AJ Lee married CM Punk who she also had a great pairing with on television. It seems like WWE should have cashed in on that angle a bit more.
#3 Daniel Bryan and Gail Kim
After his return, the WWE planted Bryan in the United States Title scene with a memorable feud opposite The Miz and gave him the title at Night Of Champions 2010. The writers didn't seem to like the fact that he was growing in popularity as a nerdy babyface, so they fancied another gimmick for him.
Thanks to the storyline, Daniel began hanging out with The Bella Twins (which would later become a real-life romance between him and Brie). The announcers wondered aloud what the smoking hot sisters saw in such a geek, and that only made it more insane when Bryan revealed he'd been dating Gail Kim all along.
The storyline didn't last long at all, but it did everything to portray Daniel as a dark horse ladies' man who had quiet charisma outside the ring. Throughout this angle, and probably because of his budding relationship with Brie behind the scenes, Bryan looked highly uncomfortable and obviously seemed like he'd rather be doing anything else.
#2 Vince McMahon and Sable
Sable made her WWE debut in 1996, alongside then-husband Marc Mero, who she later left. Sable eventually married Brock Lesnar. Prior to meeting Lesnar, she made her mark with becoming a model for Playboy and then quitting the WWE in 1999 (claiming it was because they wanted her to go nude) and filing a $10 million lawsuit against the company.
Vince countersued and they eventually settled out of court. It was rather strange that when she made her comeback years later, she took her top off during a catfight with Stephanie McMahon. When she came back as Vince’s mistress and when she went topless anyway, it sparked the notion that she had been having an affair with McMahon and that was the real reason she left and sued the company out of spite.
That particular storyline also had her locked in a bitter feud with Vince’s daughter Stephanie and even a scuffle with his wife Linda. As with all of the mistress storylines, it eventually grew old and Sable moved on to Lesnar. The two married in 2006 and have two sons.
#1 Kane and Lita
Kane has been depicted throughout his career as a vile and sadistic monster, with some of WWE's most controversial storylines attached to him. He has a tragic background and messy love life, with his first on-screen love Tori betraying him by partnering up with his former tag team partner, X-Pac.
When it comes to Kane’s troubled romantic history, nothing compares to Lita. After his loss at WrestleMania XX, Kane fell in love with Lita, who simply wasn't interested. This led to him kidnapping Lita in May. When she later announced that she was pregnant with Matt Hardy, Kane claimed that he was the dad and that he had impregnated Lita in order to continue his legacy.
Kane defeated Hardy and married Lita after defeating Matt Hardy in a “Till Death Do Us Part” match at SummerSlam. The baby miscarried when Gene Snitsky collided with her. Even though for the next couple of years he maintained that it wasn’t his fault, was caught on camera kicking a baby into the crowd. It was a pretty distasteful display.
