3 Reasons why Jinder Mahal vs Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series is a good idea and 2 it isn't

Champion vs Champion?
Champion vs Champion at Survivor Series?

Have you heard?

If Dave Meltzer is to be believed, WWE is exploring the possibility of having Universal Champion Brock Lesnar fight WWE Champion Jinder Mahal at Survivor Series.

Now, as we hear it, their titles may not be on the line as Lesnar's limited dates mean that he's only ever going to appear on Raw and Mahal would be relegated straight back to enhancement talent status should he stray from SmackDown Live.

But it does represent a novelty affair between the two wrestlers bearing top billing — on paper at least — on each brand.

Or it represents a freak show, depending on how you look at it.

And to be honest, I can see the sense in both corners.

On that note, here are 3 reasons why Jinder Mahal vs Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series is a good idea and 2 reasons why it isn't.

Good: Prevents legitimate main eventers from eating a loss

Although he is WWE Champion now...he may not keep his spot in the long run
Although he is WWE Champion now...he may not keep his spot in the long run

This may be the real reason behind booking this match.By now, I think everyone understands that the only reason Jinder Mahal is getting an extended run with the WWE Championship is that the company wants to court the Indian market.

In the long run, however, it's hard to imagine him as a sustained fixture in the main event scene.

Therefore, it wouldn't hurt the WWE as much in the long haul if he eats a pin for Brock Lesnar as it might if the likes of Finn Balor, Seth Rollins or Bray Wyatt do.

It didn't stop them from throwing Braun Strowman and Samoa Joe under the bus, but by now, the WWE should have realized just how difficult it is to build them back up again after a lacklustre loss to Brock Lesnar.

And the unfortunate part is that unless you're called Roman Reigns, you can't really have a strong showing against him either.

Bad: The match will be a dud

Lesnar's MO is getting just a little predictable. Just a little.
Lesnar's MO is getting just a little predictable. Just a little.

Brock Lesnar seems to show up, German Suplex his opponent around a few times, kick out of a finisher and hit one F5 to win the match.

Sadly, that's become his mantra of late.

And Jinder Mahal has displayed nothing in the ring to suggest that he can bring out anything else from Brock Lesnar either.

So if and when they work a match together, we can realistically expect it to be a snoozefest.

If Jinder Mahal put us to sleep against one of the most charismatic workers in the world in Shinsuke Nakamura, it stands to reason that he's not going to fare much better against one of the laziest in Brock Lesnar.

Good: Big fight feel

A Champion vs Champion match is the WWE's marketing dream

Anytime it's Champion versus Champion, we can trust the WWE to build a strong narrative around the match.

Especially if it involves the premier Champions on both brands clashing.

Yes, Jinder Mahal hasn't been the most convincing WWE Champion but by the same admission, Brock Lesnar hasn't done justice to the Universal Title either.

But you can bet your bottom dollar that the WWE will whip up a marketing storm if they were to cross paths.

The match itself may not deliver, but if the recent trend is anything to go by, the build-up to it certainly will.

Bad: Devalues the WWE Championship

In the end, this is all that matters...
In the end, this is all that matters...

Let's face it.

There's only one winner when Jinder Mahal faces Brock Lesnar.

Considering that Vince is reportedly hell-bent upon having Roman Reigns be the first man to dethrone Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 34, the WWE Champion doesn't even have a shout.

If the WWE was willing to go as far as underselling Braun Strowman, just so that Brock Lesnar can come out looking relatively un-threatened and ripe for the plucking when Roman chances upon him, how much sleep do you think Vince is going to lose over having Lesnar practically squash Jinder Mahal?

And the worst part of this situation is that Raw and the Universal Title is going to emerge from Survivor Series looking like the A-side, while SmackDown Live and the WWE Championship are devalued.

Good: Makes Jinder look strong

Jinder Mahal's stock will rise if he manages a half decent showing against Brock Lesnar

One of the allegations that can be levelled at WWE against Jinder Mahal's Championship run is that he's never come across strong enough despite not losing the belt.

He's seen off both Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura's challenge twice each, but it still feels like he could drop the belt anytime.

That said, it's not like anyone is actually expecting him to defeat Brock Lesnar, meaning that he can come out of the match looking strong if he's booked to get in some measure of offence.

Despite the likelihood of the match being a dud, it would still bode his mediocre WWE Championship run well if he has a solid showing against the Beast.
