5 Better booking decisions for Rey Mysterio if he does return for WrestleMania 34

The fans certainly don't want to see this again.
The fans certainly don't want to see this again.

In case you didn't know, Rey Mysterio's successful one-off cameo at the Royal Rumble has kickstarted talk of the legendary Luchador possibly returning for another run with the WWE.

The dirt sheets have been stacked all throughout the week with rumors of John Cena wanting to face Mysterio at the show of shows after the heavily-speculated Undertaker dream match fell through. We're sure nobody wants to see Cena vs. Mysterio in 2018, a match that would have no build whatsoever.

WWE should, however, get Mysterio back for the granddaddy of all PPVs as the PPV seriously lacks the star power to breakthrough to the mainstream audience.

With that being said, here are the five best booking options for the original underdog of the WWE:

#1 Wild-card entry

Things could get interesting down at 205 Live.
Things could get interesting down at 205 Live.

The Cruiserweight division is currently going through a revamp of sorts with the influx of new talents under the watchful guidance of former TNA star, Rockstar Spud aka Drake Maverick as the General Manager.

The on-going tournament to crown a new Cruiserweight Champion has shifted the focus back to the in-ring work of the high-flyers and in all honesty, the show has become quite watchable in recent weeks.

The recent spate of changes in the 205 Live division could be WWE's final attempt at salvaging a failed project and with WrestleMania season on in full swing, the addition of a Cruiserweight legend in the mix would only do wonders for the product.

Remember how the tag team division breathed a new life with the return of the Hardy Boyz at WrestleMania 33? WWE has the opportunity to do something similar by inserting Mysterio in the tournament as a wild-card contestant.

Anyone of the current competitors could be written off television with an injury in order to accommodate the master of the 619.

#2 Intercontinental title picture

A tried-and-tested ladder match for the IC title with Mysterio in it could be a show-stealer.
A tried-and-tested ladder match for the IC title with Mysterio in it could be a show-stealer.

The Intercontinental title scene turns into the dumping grounds for underutilized yet top-tier superstars whenever WrestleMania season comes around. The likes of Finn Balor and Seth Rollins find themselves in the running for Miz's championship by virtue of having nothing else to do on the road to WrestleMania.

Rumors suggest WWE could even add Braun Strowman and Elias into the mix if nothing materializes for the duo. In that case, giving Mysterio the opportunity to win the IC title for the 3rd time would be the only logical way to use the 43-year-old legend.

#3 David vs. Goliath

Why the heck not?
Why the heck not?

The quintessential David vs. Goliath angle never fails to deliver with the most recent example being AJ Styles putting on a barnburner with Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series.

Mysterio is arguably the greatest small guy in WWE history. His matches against Big Show and Kevin Nash rank high amongst the biggest mismatches over the years and with a certain Braun Strowman currently directionless on Raw, Mysterio could be called upon for another stern test.

In all honesty, the match makes no sense on paper and the fans would rather have Strowman beat both Lesnar and Reigns to lift the Universal title. However, Strowman and Mysterio could help each other in more ways than one.

Strowman could demolish a bonafide legend at WrestleMania while Mysterio can come out looking strong at the age of 43 after putting on a valiant effort. These two can put on a really fun match if you think about it.

#4 Put over Andrade Cien Almas

Passing of the torch?
Passing of the torch?

A Triple-Crown Champion in Rey Mysterio returning to NXT? May sound underwhelming to a majority of the fans but it does come along with tons of potential.

WWE did something similar in the past when they got back Mickie James for an NXT Women's Championship match against Asuka at Takeover: Toronto. Trish Stratus was the original candidate for the job of putting Asuka over before a pregnancy threw a spanner in the works.

So why not book Mysterio in an NXT title match against his apparent heir to the Hispanic crown in the WWE, Andrade Cien Almas?

The NXT Champion is destined to take over from where Alberto Del Rio left off in the WWE in terms of accomplishments and the overall push he is expected to get on the main roster.

Almas already has a 5-star match in his short yet explosive NXT title reign and he could very well put another back-and-forth classic with Mysterio if given the chance at NXT Takeover: New Orleans that is scheduled to take place the Saturday before WrestleMania.

Almas gets the legendary rub, Mysterio gets a healthy warm-up before a probable main roster run, Takeover sells more tickets and the fans get to witness a vintage Lucha Libre match. It's a win-win situation for everyone.

#5 Leads the Lucha Libre revolution

Lucha...Lucha...Lucha!
Lucha...Lucha...Lucha!

WWE's lazy attempts at branding Sin Cara and Kalisto as the next Rey Mysterio have backfired miserably and the reasons behind the same are quite obvious. Pushing a generic masked luchador who has tons of fancy moves in his arsenal can only get someone over up to a certain point.

It may have worked with in Mysterio's case but some stellar character work helped his cause back in the golden ages. The times are different now and these days, factions are the best bet at building towards a breakout moment.

The 3-time WWE Champion forming a stable with the likes of Kalisto, Sin Cara, Gran Metalik and Andrade Cien Almas could click with the right treatment.

WWE could even take a page out of Impact Wrestling's book and go completely loco with Mysterio's stable, à la LAX (The Latin American Xchange) from TNA.
