5 better opponents for Rey Mysterio if he does return for WrestleMania 34

Will he make his Wrestlemania return in N'awlins?

It is once again that time of year where the rumors run rampant and the possibilities are endless, especially when it comes to potential matchups at the years biggest event...Wrestlemania.

One of the biggest points of interest this Wrestlemania season involves 2 of the greatest WWE Superstars of all-time, who happens to be 2 future WWE Hall of Famers. John Cena is heading into Wrestlemania with a lot of uncertainty after not winning the Elimination Chamber Match. The results of this pay-per-view left Cena without an opponent at 'Mania. Well, that was until the rumors began swirling like a wildfire. Suddenly, Cena went from oblivion to potentially having one of the co-main events of the entire show. Those rumors suggested that John Cena would possibly be facing Rey Mysterio in what would be a guaranteed huge draw.

With this said, that would indeed be a great contest to add to the card at Wrestlemania 34. But then again, we are all aware that a rumor is often not worth even mentioning, that is until we have confirmation from WWE, Cena or Mysterio.

If this super-match doesn't come to fruition, what direction would you send Mysterio in order to keep him on the card? The options are endless, in a sense. However, it could still be a major draw without having Cena as an opponent, if the proper opponent is put in place to take on Rey.

Here's a look at 5 potential opponents for Mysterio at Wrestlemania 34 that could even be better for Rey.

#5 Sami Zayn

This could be a huge contest.

Sami Zayn is currently riding the tail-end of a pretty significant tidal wave. Well, I guess that has been the story of his entire career as a WWE Superstar. Sami has been on a roller coaster ride of sorts, ever since his days in NXT.

Zayn is a tremendously talented Superstar, capable of working with anyone, even someone with the skill level and experience of Rey Mysterio. While this is not a very likely scenario, it could be a quick go-to backup bout, if needed.

#4 Hideo Itami

This could be a nice way to make a comeback for Hideo.

Since signing his WWE contract, Hideo Itami has faced a severe amount of adversity, primarily due to his infectious case of the injury bug. However, things could be taking a turn for the better, with his recent involvement with the 205 Live roster.

With his new start as a cruiserweight contender, Itami may finally be pointed in the proper direction and he would certainly be a great candidate for the Cruiserweight Championship. With that in mind, a match with someone the caliber of a Rey Mysterio, on such a huge stage as Wrestlemania...this could n the catalyst needed to get Itami back on track.

#3 Adam Cole

No back-story, yet very intriguing.

The ceiling for this guy is incredibly high. In fact, some believe Adam Cole could join the main roster and jump into a title picture immediately.

A match against Rey Mysterio would provide a platform where two top-tier superstars could meet on the grandest stage of them all, for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to really make a tremendous statement not only about today's younger stars but also the fact that some of the over-40 stars are still more than capable of tearing down a house.

Even in a situation where Rey loses to someone like Adam Cole, he would still come out shining as bright as ever. With that said, it would also create an opportunity for Adam Cole to jump a few ranks on one of the main rosters.

#2 Chris Jericho

This would be a main-event caliber match!

It's pretty obvious that Chris Jericho and Rey Mysterio are both main-event Superstars and future WWE Hall of Famers. With that said, it would not take much to promote this contest and have it built as one of the top bouts at Wrestlemania.

Both Jericho and Mysterio have blazed similar paths to where they are now. Both have had major success not only as WWE Superstars but also with WCW. Not to mention both have globe-trotted all over the world, from Tokyo-to-Mexico City and everywhere in between. These guys are two of the last remaining living, active legends and while they are both in their 40's, respectively, they both still have more than enough fuel left needed to steal the show at Wrestlemania 34 in New Orleans.

#1 Kalisto

The past meets the future...

Kalisto was another huge independent star who signed his WWE contract in 2013 after making a name for himself as Samuray del Sol. With success in promotions such as PWG, CZW, and AAA, just to name a few, Kalisto came to the WWE battle-tested and prepared to follow in the footsteps of those just like Rey Mysterio.

This is a match-up that I have thought about since Kalisto first signed with the company. With Rey just now showing signs of possible interest in returning, it could be finally time to see the past meet the future. However, if this match were to happen, the build would need to begin immediately, in order to make this a draw that it could potentially be. There's still that chance that Mysterio comes back and does the right thing, which would be taking a loss against this newer star, which would go a long way in regards to Kalisto getting elevated to the platform he rightfully deserves.
