After spending around 5 years in WCW, Chavo signed a contract with WWE when Ted Turner's company folded and was bought out by Vince McMahon. He was relegated to the mid-card for years on end, including tag team stints with Eddie Guerrero, his uncle.

It all changed on the January 22 episode of ECW, where Chavo defeated CM Punk in a No DQ match to bag the ECW World title, following interference from WWE's top heel, Edge. Following this victory, Chavo dubbed Edge as 'family'. He then successfully defended the ECW title against Punk on two separate occasions.

At WrestleMania 24, a battle royal was held to determine the #1 contender for Chavo's title, which was won by Kane. Later in the night, Kane defeated Guerrero in 11 seconds to become the new ECW Champion.

As Chavo was awaiting the arrival of The Big Red Machine, he came out from under the ring, instead of making his usual entrance. A quick Chokeslam ended things for Chavo in a hurry and Kane bagged the title.
