5 bookings for the Intercontinental Championship in 2016

Mark out moment if he wins it.

The Intercontinental Championship might not have the relevance that the WWE championship has but at the same time, it is a championship that has an equally important part in the history of WWE. Over the years, the value of the Intercontinental championship has taken a hit to be precise. It is time for WWE to rethink their strategy about the championship and try to push it back to the glory days.

While it is not easy as it sounds on paper, it is not an impossible mission. There are certain booking decisions that WWE could implement to elevate the Intercontinental Championship and here is a rundown on the same.

#5 Elimination Chamber maybe

The elimination Chamber

The Elimination Chamber is a prestigious match. The concept is usually used for the WWE championship or to determine the number one contender and using it for the purpose of crowning a new Intercontinental Champion would be something different.

The Intercontinental championship usually does not get such big spot light and if six credible superstars fight it out inside the Chamber, it is bound to work. WWE could throw this into one of the major pay-per-views and the match would fill in the spot as a good undercard match which has the potential to steal the show. Or, they could simply let the match headline a pay-per-view, which is our second possible booking decision.

#4 Letting the title headline a pay-per-view

IC title could headline a PPV

Headlining a pay-per-view, irrespective of whether it is a big one or a small one, is something special. All the superstars out there want to be on top of the card as there is a certain amount of respect that it adds to one’s career. The story with championships is no different. In a typical case, it is the WWE championship that headlines the shows.

As far as NXT is concerned, WWE has already tried letting the Women’s title headline their special shows and it worked wonders for the title. It is one of the most respected championships in the roster right now and Intercontinental championship could enjoy a similar privilege if given the limelight that it deserves.

#3 The one on one ladder match

One on one ladder match tells better story

The first thing that probably comes to our mind when we talk about the Intercontinental championship is the classic ladder match that went down between Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels. Michaels and Ramon set the bar for one-on-one ladder matches and it was one of those outings that made the Intercontinental Championship look like a big deal.

Though WWE throws in ladder matches for the Intercontinental championship every once in a while, it is usually multi-superstar matches. The purpose seems to be just filling a pay-per-view spot and give some superstars their moment under the limelight. On the other hand, if WWE actually pits two superstars against each other with the title on the line, it would actually feel like that the title is valuable in nature.

#2 King of the ring for Intercontinental championship

Barrett had no benefit of being the King

The King of the ring tournament is one of those long-standing traditions that have lost its momentum due to WWE’s toned down booking. Last time around, WWE booked the tournament in a heavily depleted manner and it did draw a lot of criticism. Making the Intercontinental championship a part of the King of the ring would be a great idea to elevate both.

The intercontinental championship will have a royal feel towards it when the King of the Ring winner would walk out with something around his waist along with the crown on his head. Having a long tournament will keep the title relevant as well.

#1 Covering the Cena syndrome

A title that Cena is yet to win

The career of John Cena has seen it all. He is near the record for most number of WWE championship reigns, he has won the United States Championship numerous times, have headlined WrestleMania on different occasions and much more. But one thing that Cena is yet to achieve is the Intercontinental championship.

For some reason or the other, the Cenation leader and the Intercontinental championship had different paths altogether. Cena is bound to have a blockbuster return from injury in 2016 and if WWE lets him challenge for the Intercontinental championship before 2016, it would be a great way to elevate the title.
